Is Whatafile a free file converter?
For pictures, video and sound, yes: those tools run in your browser, free with no daily limit. Documents, slides, spreadsheets and PDFs convert on our servers, where the free plan gives you 3 conversions a day, one file at a time, up to 25 MB each, and Image to Text counts towards the same 3. Pro is $9 a month, plus tax where applicable, for unlimited conversions and files up to 100 MB.
Are my files uploaded?
Not pictures, video or sound: those tools work on your own device. If your browser cannot open a picture, the page offers our server instead and sends it only if you choose. Documents, slides, PDFs and Image to Text go to our servers, encrypted in transit and at rest, and every file and result is deleted 24 hours after the conversion.
Do I need an account?
No. Every tool works without one, so you can convert first. Sign up only if you want a saved history of your conversions, or to go Pro.
What does the grade on a conversion mean?
It tells you how much of your file comes through, before you convert. Exact: nothing is re-drawn or interpreted on the way. Picture-perfect: it looks right, but text may become part of a picture, or a transparent background turn white. Very good: small changes, such as a margin or font moving, or fine detail softening in a photo. Good enough: it opens and reads well, but do not expect the original back. Words only: the text without the layout. You see the grade when you pick a document or picture pair above, and on that pair's own page.
How do I change a file's format?
Pick the format you have under Change a file format above, then the one you want, and press Open this tool, or type a pair such as “pdf to word” into the search at the top. Common picture jobs run in your browser: convert WebP to JPG or convert WebP to GIF when an app will not take a WebP, and convert SVG to PDF or convert SVG to JPG when a drawing has to print or go in a post.
Which browsers do the image and video tools work in?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox. The audio tools work the same way as the video tools, so the same goes for them.
