Turning PDF pages into JPG pictures

To convert PDF to JPG, select or drop your PDF on this page, choose a Resolution and an Image quality, and press Convert to JPEG. JPG and JPEG are two names for the same format. Every page becomes a picture of its own: a one-page PDF gives you one JPG, and a longer PDF gives you a ZIP with one JPG per page, numbered in page order.

Going from PDF to picture helps whenever a page has to be looked at rather than opened as a document: a flyer to post, a page to send in a chat, a certificate for an upload form that only takes images, or a page to place on a slide. People usually change PDF to JPG for this because JPG opens almost everywhere.

The page limit is 100 for each PDF. A longer one is turned away before anything converts, and the message gives its page count, so you know how far to split it.

Other files can become JPG pictures too: slides with convert PowerPoint to JPG, a saved web page with convert HTML to JPG, and a plain .txt file with convert text to JPG.

How to convert PDF to JPEG

  1. 1
    Select or drop your PDF

Nothing uploads until you press convert.

  2. 2
    Choose your options

We show the route and its fidelity grade up front.

  3. 3
    Download your JPG

Then it is deleted after 24 hours, automatically.

What you are starting with

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

What you are getting

Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.

Worth knowing

JPEG compresses the picture and has no transparency, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

Good to know about converting PDF to JPEG

  • Every page becomes its own JPEG. A one-page PDF gives one image; a longer one gives a ZIP named after the PDF, with the pages numbered in order: report.pdf gives report-p001.jpg, report-p002.jpg and so on.
  • At the default 150 DPI an A4 page comes out about 1240 × 1755 pixels. Choose 300 DPI for printing, or 96 DPI for screens and email.
  • Image quality is Smaller, Balanced or Best. For pages that are mostly text or diagrams, PNG keeps edges sharper.
  • Up to 100 pages at a time.

Choosing resolution and quality

This PDF to JPG converter has two settings. Resolution, in dots per inch (DPI), sets how many pixels each page gets: 96, 150 or 300 DPI, with 150 as the default. Image quality sets how hard the picture is compressed: Smaller, Balanced (the default) or Best. Raising either one gives a sharper picture and a bigger file. One A4 page filled with a photo came out at these sizes in our tests:

One A4 photo page at each setting
ResolutionPixelsSmallerBalancedBest
96 DPIAbout 794 × 112361 KB91 KB200 KB
150 DPI (default)About 1240 × 1755119 KB175 KB390 KB
300 DPIAbout 2480 × 3508326 KB465 KB1,069 KB

Use 96 or 150 DPI for screens, email and chat, and 300 DPI for printing or for small print you want to zoom into. For PDF to JPG in high quality, pick Best at 300 DPI: the photo page above grew from 175 KB at the default settings to about 1 MB.

Tip: No setting makes a JPG lossless. JPG saves space by simplifying fine detail, and even Best does a little of that. If every pixel of the page must survive, convert PDF to PNG instead.

JPG or PNG for your pages

JPG is the better choice for pages that are mostly photos. The photo page above came out at 175 KB as a Balanced JPG and 1,443 KB as a PNG, more than eight times bigger.

For a PDF to image conversion where the pages are mostly text or diagrams, PNG is often better. It keeps the edges of letters and lines sharp, and the file is not always bigger: a short letter came out at 48 KB as a PNG against 63 KB as a JPG, while a page packed with small print was about a fifth bigger as a PNG. The guide on when to send a JPEG and when to send a PNG explains why.

Either way, the words on the page become part of the picture, so they cannot be selected or edited. To change the text, convert PDF to Word instead.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

Select or drop your PDF on this page; nothing uploads until you press convert. Choose a Resolution and an Image quality, or keep 150 DPI and Balanced, then press Convert to JPEG. Download one JPG for a one-page PDF, or a ZIP with a JPG for each page.

How do I turn a PDF into a picture?

Convert it to JPG here, and every page becomes its own picture. JPG suits photos and pages you want to share. For pages that are mostly text or diagrams, PDF to PNG keeps the edges sharper.

What DPI should I choose for PDF to JPG?

150 DPI, the default, suits screens and documents: an A4 page comes out at about 1240 × 1755 pixels. Choose 300 DPI for printing, or 96 DPI for screens and email when a small file matters most.

Can I convert a PDF to JPG without losing quality?

Not entirely, because a JPG always simplifies some fine detail to save space. Choose Best and 300 DPI to keep as much as possible. For a copy with nothing lost, convert the PDF to PNG, which keeps every pixel of the page as it is drawn.

How many pages can I convert to JPG at once?

Up to 100 per PDF, each page saved as its own JPG inside one ZIP. A PDF with more pages is refused before it converts, so split it into parts first. The whole PDF counts as one of your three free conversions a day, however many pages it has.

Can I convert just one page of my PDF?

This page turns every page into an image and gives you them in a ZIP, numbered in order. Take the page you need from the ZIP.

Is converting PDF to JPG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your PDF and the JPG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the JPG look exactly like the PDF?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
