Convert ODT (OpenDocument) files to PDF

Why send an ODT as a PDF

To convert ODT to PDF, select or drop your .odt file on this page, press Convert to PDF and download the result. It is one step on our server, graded Very good, and the PDF keeps your file's name, so report.odt comes back as report.pdf.

ODT is short for OpenDocument Text, the open standard that LibreOffice saves in and that many councils and government offices ask for. Not everyone you send it to has a program that opens it, though. A PDF opens almost anywhere, looks the same on every screen and is hard to change by accident. For more on the format itself, read what an ODT file is for.

You do not need an office suite for this OpenDocument to PDF route. Our server opens your file and saves it as a PDF.

What you are starting with

The open standard. Governments and open-source office suites love it.

What you are getting

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

Worth knowing

Fonts we do not have are drawn in a stand-in of the same width where there is one, such as Carlito for Calibri. A font with no stand-in is replaced by another.

What the PDF keeps

We converted test documents made for the purpose and checked each PDF. This is what came through:

  • Every page, at the size set in the document. An A4 document gives A4 pages, and a US Letter one gives US Letter pages.
  • Your words stay text, so you can search the PDF and copy from it.
  • Headings become bookmarks: the outline a PDF reader shows beside the pages, one click from each heading.
  • Links to websites stay clickable, and so do links to another place in the document. A footnote number jumps to its footnote.
  • Tables, pictures, headers, footers, page numbers and footnotes stay where they were.

Comments and tracked changes

Comments are left out of the PDF. Tracked changes still in the document print the way they show on screen: deleted words crossed out and new words underlined, in colour, with a line in the margin. Accept or reject them in your office suite before you convert.

Which fonts the PDF uses

Our server has its own set of fonts. A font it has is used as it is. The common Microsoft fonts are swapped for free fonts with the same letter widths, so the text takes the same room. Any other font is drawn in DejaVu Sans.

Fonts in your ODT and in the PDF
Font in your documentDrawn in the PDF with
Liberation Serif or Liberation Sans, free standard fontsThe same font
Arial, Times New Roman or Courier NewLiberation Sans, Serif or Mono, with the same widths
Calibri or CambriaCarlito or Caladea, with the same widths
Another font, such as Georgia, Verdana or Open SansDejaVu Sans, a plain sans-serif, so lines can break in other places
A font embedded in the documentThat font, unchanged
Tip: To keep an unusual font, embed it. In LibreOffice, choose File > Properties, open the Font tab, tick Embed fonts in the document, then save and convert again. Georgia and Comic Sans MS embedded this way came through unchanged in our test.

Accents, Greek and Cyrillic print correctly. Chinese, Japanese and Korean text comes out as empty boxes, because our server has no font with those letters.

Exporting to PDF from your office suite

If the program that opens your .odt is on your computer, it can save the PDF itself:

  • LibreOffice Writer: File > Export As > Export as PDF.
  • Apache OpenOffice Writer: File > Export as PDF.
  • Microsoft Word, which opens .odt files: File > Save As (or Save a Copy), then choose PDF as the file type. Word can change some formatting when it opens an .odt, so check the PDF.

This ODT to PDF converter is for when none of those is installed, such as on a work or library computer, or when someone sent you an .odt you cannot open. Three conversions a day are free, with no account, and both files are deleted from our server after 24 hours.

Still editing the document? Convert ODT to Word for a .docx you can change, or convert PDF to ODT to get an editable file back from a PDF. Other documents have their own routes: Word to PDF for a .docx, and convert RTF to PDF for rich text. To share a page as a picture instead, for a slide or a website, convert ODT to PNG.

Questions people ask

How do I convert an ODT file to PDF?

Press Select ODT file, or drop the file anywhere on this page, then press Convert to PDF and download the PDF. The free plan converts three files a day, up to 25 MB each, with no account.

Is OpenDocument the same as ODT?

Nearly. OpenDocument is a family of open formats, and .odt is its text document, the kind a word processor makes. The family also has .ods for spreadsheets and .odp for presentations.

Can I convert an .ods or .odp file here?

No. This page takes .odt text documents only, and the site has no converter for OpenDocument spreadsheets or presentations. LibreOffice can save both as a PDF with File > Export As > Export as PDF.

Will the PDF use the same fonts as my document?

Yes for LibreOffice's Liberation fonts and for any font embedded in the file. Arial, Times New Roman, Courier New, Calibri and Cambria are swapped for fonts of the same widths. Any other font becomes DejaVu Sans, so embed it before you convert if the look matters.

Do links stay clickable in the PDF?

Yes. In our test, a link to a website and a link to a bookmark further down the document both worked in the PDF. The headings became bookmarks too, so you can jump between sections.

Are comments and tracked changes included?

Comments are left out. Tracked changes still in the document print as they show on screen, crossed out and underlined in colour, so accept or reject them before you convert.

Is converting ODT to PDF free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your ODT and the PDF we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PDF look exactly like the ODT?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
