What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

To change JPG to PNG, drop the photo on this page and press Convert to PNG. The PNG is made in your browser and holds the same pixels as the JPEG, one for one, which is why the route from JPEG to PNG is graded Exact. Nothing is uploaded.

The picture looks the same afterwards. What changes is how it is stored: a PNG is lossless, so from now on it can be edited and saved again without getting softer. A few things around the pixels change too:

  • A colour profile in the JPEG, such as Adobe RGB from a camera, is copied into the PNG, so the colours stay true on wide-colour screens.
  • A photo your phone stored on its side is saved the right way up, because the turn is applied to the pixels.
  • The file keeps its name with .png on the end: IMG_2041.jpg is saved as IMG_2041.png.

How to convert JPEG to PNG

    Select or drop your JPG

    It stays on your device.

Nothing was uploaded, so there is nothing to delete.

What you are starting with

Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels with transparency. Screenshots, logos, anything with an edge.

Worth knowing

One step, one tool. Nothing is interpreted on the way.

Good to know about converting JPEG to PNG

  • PNG is lossless: you can edit and re-save the PNG as often as you like without adding blur.
  • The JPEG's own compression marks stay. Converting cannot undo them.
  • A JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG has a solid background too.
  • Camera and location details stored in the JPEG (EXIF) are removed.

Good reasons to change JPG to PNG

  • You will edit the picture more than once. Every save as JPEG blurs it a little more; as a PNG, the loss stops here.
  • An app, a website or an upload form accepts PNG and refuses JPG.
  • You need a working copy for a design or a print layout, where each export should start from the same untouched pixels.

If the real goal is a transparent background, skip this page. Make background transparent opens the JPG as it is, turns one plain colour such as white see-through and saves a PNG. It removes a colour; it does not cut people or objects out of a busy photo.

For a photo that only needs to be emailed or posted, the JPG is usually the better file already. JPEG vs PNG explains which format suits which picture.

Expect a bigger file

A JPEG stays small by discarding detail you are unlikely to notice. A PNG keeps every pixel, and the fine grain of a photo is hard to pack without loss, so the PNG grows. Our test photos came out about three to six times larger. Your browser does the saving, so the size differs a little from one browser to another.

Need the PNG but not its size? Compress image can make it smaller without losing a pixel, or much smaller with fewer colours. And if a PNG of your own is too heavy to send, convert PNG to JPG instead.

Converting a folder of JPGs

Select up to 100 JPGs, or drop them on the page together. They are converted one after another on your device, each under its own name. Save each PNG with its Download button, or press Download all (ZIP) to get them in one file, whatafile-converted.zip. There is no daily limit.

Tip: A JPEG saved in print colours (CMYK) cannot be converted faithfully in the browser. The page says so and offers Convert on our server instead. Nothing is uploaded unless you press it, and on the free plan that conversion counts towards the daily limit.

Not every picture is a JPG? Scans often arrive as TIFF, and you can convert TIFF to PNG the same way. The PNG converter opens HEIC, WebP, AVIF, BMP and GIF pictures too.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a JPG to PNG?

Select or drop the JPG here, or up to 100 of them, and press Convert to PNG. Then press Download to save the PNG, or Download all (ZIP) for several. The photo never leaves your device.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG copies the JPEG's pixels exactly, marks included. What you gain is that later edits and saves stop losing quality, which they would as JPEG.

Can a JPG become a PNG with a transparent background?

No. A JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. If that background is one plain colour, such as white, Make background transparent can turn it see-through and save a PNG.

Why is the PNG file bigger than my JPG?

A JPEG saves space by discarding detail, while a PNG stores every pixel without loss. In our tests the PNG was three to six times the size: a 3.9 MB camera photo became 15 to 19 MB, depending on the browser.

Can I convert JPG to PNG on Windows or a Mac without installing anything?

Yes. The page works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows and on a Mac, and the conversion runs inside the browser, so there is no app to download.

Is converting JPG to PNG free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The JPG is read and the PNG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the PNG look exactly like the JPG?

This pair grades as “Exact”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
