Convert CSV to Excel (XLSX)
Open a CSV as a real workbook, each value in a cell of its own.
or drop your CSV anywhere on this page
CSV → XLSX
Why open a CSV as a workbook
To convert CSV to Excel, press Select CSV file and pick your .csv, then press Convert to XLSX and download the workbook. Each value lands in a cell of its own, and numbers become numbers you can add up, sort and filter.
A CSV is plain text: one table, with no formatting, no formulas and no second sheet. Opened straight in a spreadsheet app, it can land in a single column or with its accents garbled, depending on its separator and text encoding. An .xlsx workbook keeps your columns, and anything you add later: formats, formulas, charts and more sheets.
Need it as pages instead, to print or send as it is? Convert CSV to PDF. Once the workbook is ready to share, Excel to PDF turns it into pages. For a text file that is not a table, convert text to Word instead.

A table as plain text, one row a line, its values split by commas. No formatting and no formulas.
Modern Excel. Rows, columns and formulas, often across several sheets.
Each value lands in a cell of its own, accents and quoted commas included. Numbers and dates are read as a spreadsheet reads them: leading zeros are dropped, and a date written day first may be read month first.
Good to know about converting CSV to XLSX
- The separator is found from the file, so comma and semicolon files both split into columns. Quoted values keep their commas, quotes and line breaks.
- UTF-8 files, with or without a byte order mark, and older Windows text keep their accents.
- Numbers, percentages and dates written year first become real values you can sum and sort. A number with a decimal comma, such as 1.234,56, stays text.
- Codes made only of digits lose their leading zeros (00123 becomes 123), and a day-first date such as 05/01/2026 can be read as 1 May 2026.
What comes through
We converted test files of the kinds spreadsheets and other systems export, read every cell of each workbook and opened it in Excel:
- Every row and column. 3,000 rows and a file of 40 columns came back whole, and so did a 24 MB file of about 310,000 rows, in under half a minute.
- Each value in a cell of its own, ready to sort, filter and total. A quoted value keeps its commas, its quotes and even a line break inside the one cell.
- Numbers became numbers, percentages became percentages (12.5% is 0.125, shown as 12.50%), and dates written year first became real dates.
- One sheet, since a CSV holds one table. Add more sheets, formulas, colours and charts in Excel afterwards.
Values that change on the way
- Leading zeros are dropped, because 00123 is read as the number 123. A code with a letter or a dash in it, such as 90-001, stays as typed.
- A date written day first can be read month first: 05/01/2026 became 1 May 2026. One that cannot be read that way, such as 28/10/2026, stays as text.
- Numbers written with a decimal comma, such as 1.234,56, stay as text, and so do dates written 28.10.2026.
- A number longer than 15 digits loses its last ones: 9999999999999999 became 10000000000000000. Card and account numbers are safer kept as text.
Questions people ask
How do I convert a CSV file to Excel?
Press Select CSV file, or drop the .csv on this page, then press Convert to XLSX and download the workbook. The free plan converts three files a day, one at a time, up to 25 MB each, with no account. Both files are deleted from our server after 24 hours.
Is CSV to XLSX the same as CSV to Excel?
Yes. XLSX is the file type Excel has saved workbooks in since 2007, so this page makes an .xlsx. It opened with no repair prompt in Excel 2007, the oldest version we tried.
Will formulas or formatting come through?
A CSV has none to keep: it holds only values, so a formula in the program that exported it arrives as its result. The workbook starts as plain cells, ready for you to format in Excel.
Why did some of my numbers or dates change?
Values are read the way a spreadsheet reads them. Codes made only of digits lose their leading zeros, a day-first date such as 05/01/2026 can be read as 1 May, and a number longer than 15 digits loses its last ones.
Can I get an older .xls file instead?
No. This page makes .xlsx, the format of every Excel since 2007. An .xls sheet holds at most 65,536 rows, while an .xlsx sheet holds over a million.
Is converting CSV to Excel free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your CSV and the Excel we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the Excel look exactly like the CSV?
This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
