iPhones save photos as HEIC. On the phone that is fine, but copy one to a Windows PC, a print kiosk or an upload form and it often will not open. Changing HEIC to JPG fixes that, because a JPG opens almost everywhere.
This page opens Convert image with Convert to already set to JPG. Your photos are read and converted in your browser, so they never leave your computer. It is free, with no account and no watermark, and it takes up to 100 photos per run.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Copy the photos from your iPhone to your computer, or download them from wherever you keep them.
- Press Select images and pick the .heic or .heif files, or drop them anywhere on the page.
- Convert to is already on JPG. Pick a Quality: Smaller, Balanced or Best.
- Check the stage. Split view shows the HEIC on the left and the JPG on the right.
- Press Convert, or Convert 20 pictures for a batch, then save. IMG_4021.HEIC comes out as IMG_4021.jpg.
If your browser cannot open HEIC files on its own, as Chrome and Firefox cannot, a HEIC reader of about 1.5 MB loads the first time you add one. After that it stays loaded while the page is open, so the next photos open straight away. To convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac, use this page in Chrome or Firefox: the reader loads there too, and the steps are the same.
A .heif file opens the same way and also comes out as a JPG, so the page works for HEIF to JPG too. HEIF is the name of the format, and HEIC is the kind an iPhone saves. If a site asks you to convert HEIC to JPEG, these are the files it wants: JPG is the short name for the same format.
Each Quality choice shows the size the JPG will have. The one you pick becomes exact once the JPG has been made in the background, so the Result line tells you what you will save before you press the button.
HEIC vs JPG: what changes when you convert
HEIC packs a photo into fewer bytes than JPG, which is why the iPhone uses it. The catch is support: many Windows PCs, older programs and websites cannot show it without extra software. JPG is older and less efficient, but nearly everything can read it. Here is what the change means for your photos.
| HEIC (from the iPhone) | JPG (from this page) | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on | iPhones, Macs and some newer programs | Almost every device, program and website |
| File size | Small for its quality | Usually larger for the same look |
| Location, camera and date details | Stored in the file | Not copied: the JPG is drawn fresh |
| A photo taken sideways | Turned by a note in the file | Turned in the pixels, so it is always the right way up |
The missing details matter before you share a photo. A JPG made here carries no location, so it does not show where you live or where it was taken. The date the photo was taken goes too, so if you sort an album by date, keep the HEIC files as well.
Converting a HEIC file to JPG keeps only its main picture, so you get exactly one JPG for each HEIC file you add. The JPG has the same width and height in pixels as the photo, so nothing is cropped or shrunk.
Choosing a quality for your JPG photos
JPG leaves out fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, and Quality says how much. The three choices stand for 60, 80 and 95 on the usual 0 to 100 scale.
- Smaller (60): for email, chat and forms with a strict size limit. Fine detail can soften a little.
- Balanced (80): the default. Very hard to tell apart from the original at normal viewing sizes.
- Best (95): for prints, photos you will edit, and pictures with fine text. The files are the largest.
A JPG at Best can come out bigger than the HEIC it came from. That is normal, because JPG needs more bytes for the same detail. Use Hold to compare on the stage to see the original while you decide. If the JPGs are still too big for a site's limit, Compress JPEG can make them smaller, down to a target size if you need one.
Want every pixel of the photo kept exactly, for editing or for a design program? HEIC to PNG does that, at the cost of much larger files.
Batch convert HEIC photos from a whole album
To batch convert HEIC to JPG, select up to 100 photos at once, or add more from the work screen. They line up in a strip under the stage, and each one is converted with the same Quality. When the batch is done, Save all as ZIP saves every JPG in one file, each with its own name.
- A photo that cannot be read says This HEIC file could not be read, with the reason the reader gave. The others carry on.
- If a JPG slips into the batch, it is saved again with _converted in its name, so nothing is overwritten.
- PNG, WebP and other pictures open on this page too, and come out as JPG. WebP files have pages of their own: convert WebP to JPG, or convert WebP to PNG to keep every pixel.
- The Result line adds up the batch as an estimate, marked ≈.
- Each JPG keeps the name of its HEIC, so an album sorted by name keeps its order.
Need the photos in a single document instead, say for a report or an application? JPG to PDF opens HEIC too and puts one photo on each page.
Want to copy the text from a picture of a letter or a receipt? Image to Text reads pictures on our server and does not open HEIC, so convert the photo to JPG here first.
Open HEIC files privately, on your own computer
Photos from a phone are personal. Many converters ask you to send them to a server first. Here the HEIC reader runs inside the page, so you can open HEIC files and convert them without them leaving your device.
It is also the simplest answer to how to open HEIC files on Windows without installing anything. Convert them here in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, then open the JPGs in whatever photo viewer, editor or website you already use.
- Nothing is uploaded, and our server does no picture work.
- It is free, with no account and no watermark. Image tools are not counted in the free daily limit, which applies to document conversions only.
- It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on your computer. Very large pictures may be too big for your browser.
For other formats, such as WebP or AVIF, use Convert image. To make a website icon from a photo, PNG to ICO opens the JPG too.
Turn your HEIC photos into JPGs
To change HEIC or HEIF to JPG, select your photos, keep Convert to on JPG, pick a Quality and press Convert. Each photo keeps its name and comes out the right way up, with no location details inside.
Moving iPhone photos to JPG this way keeps them on your own computer from start to finish. It is free, and there is nothing to install. Select your photos above to start.
