Why send a Word document as a PDF
To convert a Word document to PDF, press Select Word file and pick your .docx or .doc, then press Convert to PDF and download the result. It keeps your document's name, so report.docx comes back as report.pdf.
A PDF looks the same on every device and resists editing, so the layout you checked is the layout everyone sees. That is why finished documents, applications and anything for print are usually sent this way. Our guide to when to send an .odt, a Word file or a PDF puts it simply: if nobody asked for a format and the document is final, send a PDF.
Sometimes that is not what was asked for. From the same document you can convert Word to ODT for an office that wants OpenDocument, save Word as HTML to put it on a web page, pull out just the text to paste it somewhere else, or make a TIFF for archiving, with every page in one picture file.

Modern Word. The default way the working world writes things down.
A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.
Fonts we do not have are drawn in a stand-in of the same width where there is one, such as Carlito for Calibri. A font with no stand-in is replaced by another.
Good to know about converting DOCX to PDF
- Links in the document stay clickable in the PDF, and tables come through as tables.
- The older .doc format is opened as it is, so there is no need to resave it as .docx.
- Microsoft's fonts are not on our server, so the PDF uses free fonts made to the same widths: Carlito for Calibri, Caladea for Cambria, and Liberation for Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New. Text takes the same room as in Word.
- Aptos, Word's default font since 2023, has no free twin. It is drawn in Liberation Sans, so lines in an Aptos document can wrap a little differently.
Old .doc files and documents from other people
Until 2007, Word saved documents as .doc, and those files still turn up in old archives and email attachments. To convert DOC to PDF, use the same three steps as for DOCX to PDF, with nothing to resave first. In our test, a .doc gave the same two pages as the newer file it was made from. If the file is an .odt from LibreOffice instead, convert ODT to PDF the same way.
A document someone else wrote may use fonts our server does not have. The common Microsoft fonts have stand-ins of the same width, listed under Good to know above, so their text takes the same room. A font with no stand-in is drawn in a different one, which can change the look and move a line or page break. If the look matters, page through the result before you send it.
Saving as PDF without Microsoft Word
Going from Microsoft Word to PDF here needs nothing installed. The document is opened and saved as a PDF on our server, so a browser is all you need to save Word as PDF on a computer without Office, or on one you have borrowed. In our tests the result kept:
- the page size: an A4 document gives A4 pages, and a US Letter one gives US Letter pages;
- headers and footers on every page, with the page numbers filled in;
- pictures and headings, where they were in the document;
- the words as real text, so you can search, select and copy them;
- its fonts, saved inside the file, so it looks the same on any device that opens it.
A report full of photos makes a large file; Compress PDF can shrink it afterwards by lowering the resolution of the pictures.
Need to edit it again? Turn the PDF back into Word
Keep the document you started from. A PDF is made for reading, not editing, and the original is always the cleanest place to make a change. If the PDF is all you have, you can convert a PDF back to Word, but check the result before you rely on it: that page rebuilds your document from what the PDF shows, so it is a close copy rather than your original file. If it holds tables, the guide on how to convert PDF to Word with tables lists what to check.
Questions people ask
How do I convert Word to PDF?
Press Select Word file and pick your .docx or .doc, or drop it on the page, then press Convert to PDF and download the result. On the free plan you can convert one file at a time, up to 25 MB, three times a day, with no account. Both files are deleted from our server after 24 hours.
Do I need to convert my .doc to .docx first?
No. The .doc file is opened as it is and saved straight to PDF. Converting it to .docx first gains nothing here.
Will my PDF look exactly like my Word document?
Very close if it uses Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman or Courier New: the stand-in fonts have the same widths, so text takes the same room as in Word. Aptos and other fonts we do not have can move a line or page break. Tables and links come through.
Can I convert Word to PDF without Microsoft Word?
Yes. This Word to PDF converter runs on our server, so nothing needs to be installed, and you download the result in your browser. No account is needed either.
Do links and tables still work in the PDF?
Yes. Web links in the document stay clickable, and tables come through as tables, with their borders and cells in place. Headers, footers, page numbers and pictures come through too.
Can I turn the PDF back into an editable Word file?
Yes, with PDF to Word. It rebuilds the document from what the file shows: when the PDF has real text, tables come back as tables you can edit, but a complex page may need its spacing tidied. If you still have the original document, edit that instead.
Is converting Word to PDF free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your Word and the PDF we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
