Convert EPUB to PDF, chapter by chapter

An e-book laid out on pages, chapter by chapter, for printing or any PDF reader.

From e-book to printable pages

To convert EPUB to PDF, select or drop your .epub file on this page, press Convert to PDF and download the result. Our server lays the book out on A4 pages, one chapter after another in reading order, and the PDF keeps your file's name, so novel.epub comes back as novel.pdf.

An EPUB has no pages of its own. Its text flows to fit whatever screen opens it, which is what makes it comfortable on an e-reader and awkward almost everywhere else. A PDF has fixed pages, so it prints the way it looks, opens in any PDF reader and is easy to send to someone without an e-book app.

This EPUB converter takes EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 books. We tested it on public-domain books from Project Gutenberg, from a picture book of a few pages to War and Peace.

What you are starting with

An e-book. The text flows to fit any screen, so it has no pages of its own until something lays them out.

What you are getting

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

Worth knowing

Every chapter comes through in reading order, each from a new page, with its headings, pictures and links. The text is set on A4 pages in a standard font, so the book's own fonts and fancier styling are lost.

What your PDF keeps from the book

We converted real books and checked every PDF. This is what came through:

  • Every chapter, in the book's reading order, each starting on a new page.
  • The cover, on the first page.
  • Headings, which also become bookmarks: the outline a PDF reader shows beside the pages.
  • Pictures and illustrations. One wider than the page is scaled down to fit it.
  • Links. A link to a website stays clickable, and a link to another chapter jumps to its page.
  • The words stay text, so you can search the PDF and copy from it.

When a book has a table of contents but does not print one, the PDF starts with a Contents page that links to each entry. A book that prints its own contents keeps that one, and gets no second list.

What changes on the way

An e-book app draws a book with the fonts and styles that came with it. The PDF keeps the content and makes the look plainer:

  • The text is set in a standard serif font, not the fonts that came with the book.
  • Pages are A4, with the same margins throughout.
  • Simple styling comes through: italics, bold, centred or right-aligned lines and indents. Fancier layout, such as text that wraps around a picture, does not.
  • Each heading takes the size that goes with its level, whatever size the book gave it.

Books with DRM

Many shops sell e-books with DRM, a lock that ties the book to one app or account. We do not remove DRM. A locked book is refused when you upload it, before anything is converted, and the page tells you why.

Books without DRM convert as normal. That includes public-domain books and books from shops and authors that sell without DRM. Some books scramble their fonts so they cannot be copied out. That is not DRM, and those books convert too.

Long books and picture books

The free plan converts three files a day, up to 25 MB each, with no account, and Pro takes files up to 100 MB. The PDF can have up to 2,000 pages, and War and Peace fitted with room to spare in our test.

A book full of pictures can make a large PDF. If yours is too big to send, compress the PDF afterwards.

Not a book? A single web page saved as a file has its own route: convert HTML to PDF. Writing your own book in Word? Word to PDF keeps the layout you set. To take only the words back out of a PDF, convert PDF to text.

Questions people ask

How do I convert EPUB to PDF?

Press Select EPUB file, or drop the book anywhere on this page, then press Convert to PDF and download the PDF. The free plan converts three files a day, up to 25 MB each, with no account.

What happens if my EPUB has DRM?

It is refused, and nothing is converted. We cannot remove DRM, and the page says so as soon as you upload a locked book. A DRM-free copy of the same book converts as normal.

Will the PDF look the same as in my e-reader?

The words, chapters, headings and pictures are all there, in the same order. The look is plainer: a standard font on A4 pages, with only simple styling such as italics, bold and centred lines kept.

Does the PDF have a table of contents?

Yes. The headings become bookmarks you can click in any PDF reader, and links inside the book still jump to the right page. If the book does not print its own contents, the PDF starts with a Contents page that links to each entry.

Can I convert a MOBI or AZW3 e-book here?

No. This page takes .epub files only. MOBI and AZW3 are other e-book formats, and the site does not convert them.

Is there a limit on how long the book can be?

The PDF can have up to 2,000 pages. War and Peace fitted with room to spare in our test, so nearly any novel does. The file itself can be up to 25 MB on the free plan and 100 MB on Pro.

Is converting EPUB to PDF free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your EPUB and the PDF we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PDF look exactly like the EPUB?

This pair grades as “Good enough”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
