Sometimes the sound has to go. A clip has a private conversation in the background, a song you cannot use, or wind noise that spoils everything. You want the same pictures, with no audio at all. This page lets you remove audio from a video in a couple of clicks.
The mode is already set to Mute. Drop your video, press Change volume, and save the result. It runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. Below you will find what mute does, how it differs from turning the volume down, and what to try if you want to keep the sound somewhere else.
How to remove audio from a video
To remove audio from a video, drop it onto the tool above, leave the mode on Mute, press Change volume, and save the new MP4, whose name ends in _muted.
- Drop your video onto the page. You can add several and mute them all together.
- Leave the mode on Mute. It is already chosen on this page.
- Press Change volume.
- Save the new MP4, or download a batch as a zip. The file name ends in _muted.
The button says Change volume because Mute is one of three modes of the same tool. Nothing about the page is hidden: the panel shows a note that the sound track is removed.
Your original file is not touched. You keep the version with sound and get a second, silent copy.
A short video takes moments, and a long one takes longer, since the job runs on your device. Keep the tab open until the progress bar finishes, then save the file.
What mute does to your video file
Mute strips the audio track out of the file, which is the cleanest way to remove sound from a video. It does not turn the volume down to zero and leave an empty track behind. The new video has no sound track at all, so a player has nothing to play.
Where the video does not need to be re-encoded, the picture is copied as it is, and the job is quick. The pictures are not changed in any other way.
| Option | Result | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Mute | No audio track in the new file | The video should have no sound at all |
| Level at 0% in Adjust | A sound track is kept, but it is silent | A player expects a track to be present |
| Level below 100% | Quieter sound | You want to hear it, just less |
Is the sound lost for good?
In the new file, yes. The sound is not hidden or switched off, it is not there. That is why your original is worth keeping. If you may want the sound later, save it first with Extract audio and you have it as its own file.
When to remove sound from a video
A silent video is useful more often than you might expect. These are the most common reasons to strip the audio from a video.
- Background noise you cannot fix: wind, traffic, a loud room or a hum that spoils the clip.
- Copyright worries: a song is playing in the background and you cannot use it. Mute the video, then add audio of your own.
- Looping visuals: a clip for a website, a screen or a shop display that should play with no sound.
- Privacy: a conversation in the background should not be shared.
- Smaller files: sound adds to the size of a video, so removing it can help when the picture is all you need.
Think about where the video is going. Many sites and apps start videos silent anyway, and some places, such as a shop screen or a conference stand, need a video with no audio track at all. A muted file removes any doubt, because there is no sound in it to switch on by accident.
If the problem is that the video is too loud and not that the sound is unwanted, use make a video quieter instead. For every mode on one page, see Change video volume.
Mute, then add your own sound
A common pattern is to remove the sound and put something better in its place. After muting, open Add audio to video, choose a track you have the right to use, and set it to play under the pictures. Or skip the first step: Add audio has a Replace it option that swaps the sound in one go.
Keeping the sound while you work on the picture
Muting is final in the new file, so plan the order of your steps. A few habits keep you from losing something you want.
- Keep the original. The tool never changes it, so store it somewhere safe until you are sure.
- Save the sound first if it has value. Extract audio gives you the sound as MP3, WAV or AAC, so a muted video does not mean a lost recording.
- Mute before other picture work if the sound is not needed. A silent file is smaller, and later steps have less to carry.
- Check the result. Play the new file once. A muted video shows no sound meter and no audio in the player, which confirms the track is gone.
The tool has no setting to fine-tune. The result is the same pictures with no sound, which is why the page is so short to use.
What is the file format?
The result is saved as an MP4, with the name of your video and _muted on the end. Because the sound is the only thing removed, the video should look the same as before.
Free, private and works on batches
Everything runs on your own computer, in current Chrome, Edge or Firefox. The video is not uploaded, and the server does no video work. There is no account, no watermark and no charge. Video tools do not count towards the daily limit for document conversions.
You can mute many videos in one job. Drop them all in, press Change volume once, and save the results one by one or as a zip.
Most videos have no size limit. Some, such as certain AVI or WMV files, take longer and can be up to 2 GB.
