Convert ODT to DOCX for Word
Back into the format the rest of the office expects.
or drop your ODT anywhere on this page
ODT → DOCX
Why convert ODT to DOCX
To convert ODT to DOCX, press Select ODT file or drop the .odt on this page, keep DOCX under Word version, then press Convert to DOCX and download the result. On our server, your document is opened and saved again in Word's own format, in one step graded Exact. The name does not change: Council report.odt comes back as Council report.docx.
ODT, short for OpenDocument Text, is the open standard that LibreOffice Writer saves by default and that many councils and public bodies work in. DOCX is the format the rest of the office expects: colleagues on Microsoft Word, upload forms that list only Word files, and editors who want to track changes in Word. For the background, read what an ODT file is for.
You do not always need this ODT to DOCX converter. Recent desktop versions of Word open an .odt themselves, as the questions below explain. Converting is for when you need a real Word file to send on or upload, or when the computer in front of you has nothing that reads .odt.
How to convert ODT to DOCX
- 1Select or drop your ODT
Nothing uploads until you press convert.
- 2Choose your options
We show the route and its fidelity grade up front.
- 3Download your Word file
Then it is deleted after 24 hours, automatically.
The open standard. Governments and open-source office suites love it.
Modern Word. The default way the working world writes things down.
One step, one tool. Nothing is interpreted on the way.
What carries over into Word
We built test documents with the features people worry about, converted them here and took the Word files apart to check. Almost everything survived the move from ODT to Word:
| In the ODT | In the Word file |
|---|---|
| Text, bold, italic, coloured and highlighted words | Kept |
| Headings | Kept, as Word's Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles |
| Numbered, nested and bulleted lists | Kept, with the same numbers and bullets |
| Tables, including a merged cell, and pictures | Kept |
| Web links and links to a bookmark in the document | Kept as links |
| Footnotes, headers, and footers with page numbers | Kept |
| Comments | Kept, with the author's name |
| Tracked changes | Still tracked, with author and date, ready to accept or reject in Word |
| A4 or US Letter page size, and the document title | Kept |
| An equation | Kept as an equation you can edit in Word |
| A LibreOffice Basic macro | Left out, as a .docx cannot carry macros |
Equations stay equations: each one reaches Word as an equation you can edit. If your document is full of maths, check every formula once it opens in Word.
DOCX or the older DOC
This page makes both. DOCX (Word) is picked for you under Word version. DOC (Word 97) is the Word 97-2003 format, and the page suggests it only for software from before 2007. Pick it and the button changes to Convert to DOC; the ODT to DOC conversion is one step too, graded Exact.
In our test the .doc held the same content as the .docx: comments, tracked changes, footnotes, the table, pictures and links were all still there when we read it back. The one difference was embedded fonts, which only the .docx kept. Choose .docx unless you need Word 2003 or a system that only accepts .doc.
Other files reach Word the same way: convert HTML to Word for a saved web page, convert RTF to Word for a Rich Text file, or convert text to Word for a plain .txt note. If the reader only needs to read or print the document, convert the ODT to PDF instead.
Questions people ask
How do I convert ODT to Word?
Press Select ODT file, or drop the .odt on this page, keep DOCX under Word version, then press Convert to DOCX and download the Word file. The free plan converts three files a day, up to 25 MB each, with no account.
Can Word open an ODT file without converting it?
Yes. Microsoft says Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016 to 2024 open .odt files: choose File > Open > Browse, then OpenDocument Text in the file type list. It also warns that some formatting might be lost. Convert instead when you need to send someone an actual .docx, or when the computer you are on has no Word.
How do I convert ODT to DOC instead of DOCX?
Under Word version, pick DOC (Word 97), then press Convert to DOC. You get a Word 97-2003 file with the same name, so report.odt becomes report.doc.
Will tracked changes and comments survive?
Yes. In our test the tracked insertion and deletion were still tracked in the Word file, with the author and date, so you can accept or reject them in Word. The comment kept its author's name too.
Can I convert a Word file back to ODT?
Yes. Convert Word to ODT takes a .docx or a .doc and makes an OpenDocument file in one step, also graded Exact.
Is converting ODT to Word free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your ODT and the Word we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the Word look exactly like the ODT?
This pair grades as “Exact”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
