An animated WebP becomes an animated GIF

This page converts WebP to GIF on your device. An animated WebP, such as a sticker or a reaction saved from a website, comes out as an animated GIF with every frame in order. A still WebP comes out as a still GIF. Nothing is uploaded.

Each frame keeps its time on screen, and the GIF plays as many times as the WebP did. In our test a clip of 20 frames at 40 milliseconds each came out as 20 frames at 40 milliseconds, looping forever like the original, and a sticker set to play 3 times still played 3 times. The done screen says how many frames were kept.

It is a free WebP to GIF converter with no daily limit. To batch convert WebP to GIF, add up to 100 files at once: they convert one after another, each GIF keeps its name with .gif on the end (clip.webp is saved as clip.gif), and Download all (ZIP) saves them in one file.

Tip: A very long animation is the exception. Past 1,000 frames, or more than your browser can hold in memory, you get a still GIF of the first frame, and the page says why.

What you are starting with

The web’s efficient format. Smaller than JPEG, refused by older software.

What you are getting

256 colours and a loop. Old, limited, immortal.

Worth knowing

GIF keeps only 256 colours, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

Good to know about converting WebP to GIF

  • An animated WebP stays animated: every frame, in order, each shown for as long as in the WebP, and the GIF plays as many times as the WebP did.
  • A GIF stores time in hundredths of a second, so a 33 ms frame becomes 30 or 40 ms, and the animation's total length stays the same to the nearest hundredth.
  • Each frame gets its own palette of up to 256 colours, the most a GIF frame holds, so photos and smooth gradients show some banding.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent, but a GIF pixel is either see-through or solid, so soft edges become hard.
  • A still WebP becomes a still GIF.

What 256 colours do to a picture

A WebP can hold millions of colours. A GIF frame holds at most 256, so the converter picks the 256 that fit each frame best. Stickers, logos and cartoons made of a few flat colours keep them: ours came out with exactly the same colours. A photo cannot: a test photo with 41,223 different colours came out with 255. It looks right at normal size, but smooth skies and gradients show bands.

Transparency changes too. A WebP pixel can be partly see-through, but a GIF pixel is either clear or solid. Here every pixel that is at least half solid becomes solid, and most of the rest become clear. In our test a logo's soft drop shadow turned into a hard dark band and lost its faint outer edge, and a sticker's light shadow disappeared.

What changes between the WebP and the GIF
WebPGIF
ColoursMillionsUp to 256 in each frame
See-through pixelsClear, solid or anything betweenClear or solid only
Time per frameIn millisecondsIn hundredths of a second
A photo-like clipSmallOften twice the size or more

Why the GIF is bigger, and how to shrink it

GIF compresses far less than WebP. In our test a 156 KB WebP clip became a 332 KB GIF, and a 131 KB WebP photo became a 370 KB still GIF. Flat colours are the exception: a 6 KB sticker came out at 5 KB.

This page keeps the WebP's size in pixels and every frame. To make the GIF smaller, save it and open it in Compress GIF. It keeps every frame's time and the loop, and offers fewer colours, a smaller size or every second frame dropped, or a target size to fit under.

When to pick another format

  • One still picture, with no further loss and its transparency kept: choose WebP to PNG in the related conversions below. It is graded Picture-perfect.
  • A still photo for a form or an email: convert WebP to JPG, which keeps all of its colours. See-through areas turn white.
  • Print or editing software that asks for TIFF: convert WebP to TIFF.
  • Going the other way: convert GIF to WebP, which keeps the animation and makes a photo-like clip much smaller.

The same 256-colour limit applies when you convert PNG to GIF, convert JPG to GIF or convert SVG to GIF, so a GIF suits drawings and short clips better than detailed photos.

Questions people ask

How do I convert WebP to GIF?

Select or drop your WebP on this page; it stays on your device. There are no settings to choose, so press Convert to GIF and save the GIF. To change several WebP files to GIF at once, add up to 100 before you convert.

Why does my GIF look grainier than the WebP?

A GIF frame holds at most 256 colours, so a photo or a smooth gradient loses some shades and shows bands. Pictures made of a few flat colours, such as stickers and logos, keep their colours.

Does the GIF keep a transparent background?

Yes, but a GIF pixel is either clear or solid. Pixels that are at least half solid become solid and most of the rest become clear, so soft edges and drop shadows turn hard or disappear.

Can I convert WebP to GIF without losing quality?

Only for pictures with few colours: a sticker or logo of flat colours keeps them exactly, and only its soft edges change. A photo loses shades, because a GIF frame holds 256 colours. For a still picture with nothing lost, convert the WebP to PNG instead.

Does an animated WebP stay animated as a GIF?

Yes. Every frame is kept in order with its timing and the loop. If this browser cannot read the frames, or the animation is too long for it, you get a still of the first frame and the page says why.

Why is my GIF bigger than the WebP?

GIF compresses far less than WebP and stores every frame whole, so an animated GIF is often several times the size of the WebP it came from. In our test a 144 KB WebP clip of 20 frames became a 520 KB GIF.

Is converting WebP to GIF free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The WebP is read and the GIF is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the GIF look exactly like the WebP?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
