Change WebP to PNG with every pixel kept

For the software that still refuses to open a WebP.

WebP → PNG

Why some apps refuse WebP

To change WebP to PNG, drop the WebP on this page and save the PNG it gives back. That fixes a common problem: WebP is the web's efficient picture format, smaller than JPEG, so a picture saved from a website is often a .webp file, and older software, some photo editors and some upload forms still refuse to open it. They open a PNG.

Turning a WebP image to PNG adds no further loss: an opaque picture keeps every pixel, and see-through areas stay see-through, though a partly see-through edge can shift slightly in colour. That is why the route is graded Picture-perfect rather than Exact. If the WebP carries a colour profile, the PNG keeps that too.

Nothing is uploaded. This free WebP to PNG converter reads the WebP and makes the PNG on your device, so there is no daily limit and nothing on our servers to delete.

Other pictures can become PNG too. Convert TIFF to PNG for a scan or a print file, or open an AVIF, HEIC or BMP picture in the PNG converter and pick PNG under Convert to. If an AVIF has to become a JPG instead, use AVIF to JPG. Going the other way, with a PNG you want smaller for a website? Convert PNG to WebP.

What you are starting with

The web’s efficient format. Smaller than JPEG, refused by older software.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels with transparency. Screenshots, logos, anything with an edge.

Worth knowing

The PNG keeps the picture without further loss, but partly see-through pixels can shift slightly in colour.

Good to know about converting WebP to PNG

  • Transparency is kept: see-through areas of the WebP are still see-through in the PNG.
  • An animated WebP becomes a still PNG of its first frame.
  • PNG is lossless, so expect a bigger file: a 1.5 KB WebP came out at 33.7 KB in our test.
  • Camera details stored in the file (EXIF) are removed.

Saving many WebP files as PNG

To batch convert WebP to PNG, select up to 100 WebP files at once, or drop them on the page together. They are converted one after another on your device, and each PNG keeps its file name with .png on the end, so holiday.webp is saved as holiday.png. When two or more are done, Download all (ZIP) saves every PNG in one ZIP file, and each also has a Download button of its own.

Tip: If your browser cannot convert one of the files, for example a picture with more pixels than it can work on, the page names the file, says why and offers Convert on our server instead. That file is uploaded only if you press the button, and the PNGs already made on your device stay on the page, ready to save.

PNG or JPG for a WebP picture

PNG is lossless, so the file grows: a 1.5 KB WebP came out at 33.7 KB as a PNG in our test. A JPG stays smaller, but it is lossy and fills see-through areas with white. For a photo with no transparency, where size matters more than exact pixels, choose WebP to JPG from the related conversions below.

What each format keeps from a WebP
PNGJPG
PixelsEvery one, exactlySaved again, with some loss
See-through areasKeptFilled with white
File sizeUsually larger than the WebPUsually smaller than the PNG

Need the PNG but not its size? Compress PNG makes it smaller, losslessly or with fewer colours, and keeps the transparency. For a logo you will print large, PNG to SVG traces the picture into shapes that stay sharp at any size. For the longer story, read when to send a JPEG and when to send a PNG.

Animated WebP files

An animated WebP becomes a still PNG of its first frame here. To keep it moving, choose WebP to GIF from the related conversions below: the GIF keeps every frame, its timing and the loop, with up to 256 colours in each frame.

To save every frame as a picture of its own, open the WebP in GIF to frames. It saves each frame as a PNG, JPG or WebP, together in a ZIP, in browsers that can read a picture frame by frame, and tells you when yours cannot.

Questions people ask

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

Select or drop your WebP on this page; it stays on your device. Press Convert to PNG, then save the PNG. To do several at once, add up to 100 files before you convert.

How do I save a WebP image as a PNG?

Save the WebP to your device first, then drop it here. The PNG keeps the same name with .png on the end, so photo.webp is saved as photo.png.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. See-through areas of the WebP are still see-through in the PNG. Only a JPG would fill them with white.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while WebP is built to be small. In our test a 1.5 KB WebP came out at 33.7 KB as a PNG. If that is too big, compress the PNG afterwards, or choose JPG for a photo.

Can I save every frame of an animated WebP as PNG?

Not on this page, which keeps the first frame as a still PNG. GIF to frames can save each frame as its own PNG, in browsers that can read a picture frame by frame. To keep the animation instead, convert the WebP to GIF.

Will my image look sharper as a PNG than as a WebP?

No. The PNG keeps the WebP's pixels exactly, including any softness from its compression, but cannot add detail back. You get a file every app opens, at a larger size.

Is converting WebP to PNG free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The WebP is read and the PNG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the PNG look exactly like the WebP?

This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
