How it works

  1. 1
    Choose your pictures
Select one or several, or drop them on the page. They open in this tab straight away; nothing is uploaded.
  2. 2
    Set it up
Turn it a quarter at a time, mirror it, or straighten it with the slider. The preview shows the result as you go.
  3. 3
    Save the result
Press Rotate. The new picture is made on your device, ready to save.
Where your picture goes
Nowhere. It stays on this device.

The picture is read from your disk and changed inside this tab. Close the tab and nothing is left anywhere else.

What it takes
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO

It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox. An iPhone HEIC photo needs a reader of about 1.5 MB, loaded once. Very large pictures may be too big for your browser.

A photo on its side, a scan that went in upside down, a horizon that slopes downhill: small faults, but they make a picture look careless. You can rotate an image online here in a click or two, and fix a tilt with a slider, without installing anything.

This image rotator turns a picture a quarter at a time, mirrors it, flips it, or straightens it by a small angle. It runs in your browser, so the picture is never uploaded, and it is free with no watermark. Below, each control is explained, with how to straighten a photo neatly and how to rotate multiple images at once.

How to rotate an image online

  1. Press Select images, or drop one or more pictures on the page.
  2. Under Turn, use the Turn left and Turn right buttons. The words beside Turn say where you are: No turn, 90° clockwise, Upside down or 90° anticlockwise. This page starts at 90° clockwise.
  3. Switch on Mirror left to right or Flip upside down if you need a mirror image.
  4. Drag Straighten for a small turn, if the picture is tilted.
  5. Check the Result line, which shows the new size, then press Rotate.
  6. Save the picture. Its name ends in _rotated, so the original stays as it was.

Between the two turn buttons sits a letter F that turns and mirrors exactly as your picture will. It is a quick check: if the F reads backwards, so will any writing in your photo. Each press of Turn left or Turn right adds a quarter turn, so four presses bring you back to where you started.

A quarter turn swaps the width and the height, so a 4000 × 3000 photo turned 90° comes out 3000 × 4000. Nothing is cut and nothing is added. If no setting changes the picture, the panel says: Nothing changes yet. Turn, mirror or straighten the picture.

Turn, mirror and straighten: what each control does

The controls in the Rotate panel
ControlWhat it doesUse it for
TurnTurns the picture in quarter turns: 90° either way, or upside downSideways phone photos and scans
Mirror left to rightSwaps left and right, like a reflection in a mirrorSelfies that look the wrong way round
Flip upside downSwaps top and bottom, like a reflection in waterReflections and design effects
StraightenTurns by a small angle, from −45° to 45° in steps of 0.1°, and crops the cornersTilted horizons and crooked buildings

Mirroring is not the same as turning. A turn keeps the picture readable; a mirror makes writing read backwards, which the panel reminds you of under Mirror left to right. With both mirrors on at once, the result is the same as a half turn, and the tool makes it that way.

There are pages for the two mirrors on their own: flip image mirrors left to right, and flip image vertically turns the picture upside down as a reflection.

Straighten an image with a tilted horizon

A horizon that slopes or a building that leans needs only a small turn. To straighten an image like that, drag Straighten: it turns the picture by a small angle. A turned rectangle no longer fills an upright frame, so the tool crops the corners, keeping the largest upright rectangle that fits inside the turned picture. That way no empty edges show.

  1. Drag the Straighten slider. Its value shows beside the label, such as +2.5° or −1.0°.
  2. While you drag, guide lines split the kept area into thirds. Line one of them up with the horizon or a wall.
  3. A dashed rectangle shows the part that will be kept; the dimmed area outside it is cropped.
  4. Check the Result line: the size shrinks a little as the angle grows.

The order is fixed: the quarter turn and the mirrors come first, then Straighten. So you set the small angle while looking at the picture the right way up, and the guide lines sit where you expect them.

Most tilts need only a degree or two. Larger angles crop more, so if the picture also needs a quarter turn, set Turn first and then straighten. Afterwards, the Crop image tool can tidy the framing. For a set shape, crop the picture to a square, or circle crop the image for a profile picture.

Rotate a photo 90 or 180 degrees, fixed for good

Phones often save a photo as it came off the sensor and add a note saying which way is up. Some programs ignore that note and show the photo on its side. Here the photo opens the way the phone meant it to look.

If it is still sideways, the camera guessed wrong, so turn it. The saved picture has the turn built into its pixels and carries no orientation note, so it looks the same in every program. To rotate a photo 90 degrees for that reason, one press of Rotate on this page is often all you need, since it starts at 90° clockwise.

Two quarter turns make a half turn, which the panel calls Upside down. To rotate a picture 180 degrees, for a scan that went in the wrong way up, press Turn right once from the start (or twice from No turn), then press Rotate. A half turn keeps the width and the height as they were.

Turning a photo upright changes its shape from wide to tall, or back. If the place you post it wants a square and you would rather not lose the edges, make the image square by adding space around it instead.

The saved picture is drawn fresh, so it also carries no location, camera or date details, and its colours are saved as standard sRGB. A wide-colour photo can shift very slightly.

Rotate JPG and PNG pictures in a batch

Select up to 100 pictures to rotate them all the same way, for example a stack of scans that went in sideways. The button counts them (Rotate 24 pictures), and Save all as ZIP saves the results in one file. Once a scanned black-and-white negative is the right way up, invert the photo to see it as a positive.

Save as decides the format. Original keeps a JPG as a JPG and a PNG as a PNG; an iPhone HEIC photo becomes a JPG, and a GIF, BMP or TIFF becomes a PNG. A JPG is saved again at high quality, so the change is very small. PNG keeps every pixel of the turned picture exactly.

  • It runs in your browser: the picture is never uploaded, and our server does no picture work.
  • It is free, with no account and no watermark. Image tools are not counted in the daily limit, which applies to document conversions only.
  • It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Very large pictures may be too big for your browser.
  • Need to turn a clip instead? The Rotate video tool does the same for video, also in your browser.

Rotate your picture now

To rotate an image online, pick a Turn, add a mirror if you need one, and drag Straighten for a tilt, then press Rotate. The result keeps its name with _rotated on the end.

The image rotator is free and private, and nothing leaves your device. Select your pictures above to start.

Questions people ask

How do I rotate a photo 90 degrees?

This page starts at 90° clockwise, so press Rotate. For the other way, press Turn left until it says 90° anticlockwise.

How do I rotate an image 180 degrees?

Press Turn right until the words beside Turn read Upside down, then press Rotate. This page starts at 90° clockwise, so one press is enough; from No turn it takes two presses of either button.

Does rotating a JPG lose quality?

A JPG is saved again at high quality, so the change is very hard to see. Choose PNG under Save as to keep every pixel of the turned picture exactly.

How do I straighten a tilted photo?

Drag Straighten until the horizon lines up with a guide line. The corners are cropped so no empty edges show, and the Result line shows the new size.

Can I rotate multiple images at once?

Yes, up to 100 per run, all with the same settings. The results save together as a ZIP.

What is the difference between mirroring and rotating?

Rotating turns the picture and keeps it readable. Mirroring swaps left and right, or top and bottom, so writing reads backwards.

    Select a picture, or several.

  2. 2

Pick a Turn, switch on Mirror left to right or Flip upside down, or drag Straighten.
