Why move a deck from PPT to PPTX
To convert PPT to PPTX, press Select PPT file or drop the deck on this page, then press Convert to PPTX and download the new file. It is one step on our server, which opens the old deck and saves it in the current format, so you need neither PowerPoint nor anything else installed. The name stays the same: talk.ppt comes back as talk.pptx.
A .ppt is the file PowerPoint 97 to 2003 saved. Since PowerPoint 2007 it saves .pptx instead. Current versions still open a .ppt, but in Compatibility Mode, where Microsoft says some newer features stay unavailable until the deck is saved as .pptx. PowerPoint for the web opens a .ppt only to read it, not to edit it.
So change PPT to PPTX when you want to keep working on the deck, or when an upload form, template or app takes only the newer file. With PowerPoint installed, File > Info > Convert does the same and keeps the original .ppt beside the new one. This free PPT to PPTX converter is for a computer without it.

The old deck format. Conference laptops still ask for it.
Modern PowerPoint. Slides, notes, and one animation someone regrets.
One step, one tool. Nothing is interpreted on the way.
What came through in our tests
We tried two decks. One was a real 71-slide presentation saved by PowerPoint for Mac, about 40 MB, with speaker notes on almost every slide and 75 photos and images. The other we built and saved as .ppt ourselves: six slides, one of them hidden, with two animations, two transitions, a table and a web link. We then took each PPTX apart.
| In the PPT | In the PPTX |
|---|---|
| Slides | All of them, in order: 71 of 71, and 6 of 6 |
| Speaker notes | Every slide's notes, word for word |
| A hidden slide | Still hidden |
| Photos and images | Copied byte for byte, so nothing was recompressed |
| A table | A real table, every cell in place |
| A shape that appears on a click, and one that flies in | Both animations, in the same order |
| Fade and push transitions | Kept |
| Web links, on a slide and in the notes | Kept |
| Slide size: 16:9, 4:3 and 11 by 8.5 inches | Kept |
The real deck also came back at half the size, 20 MB instead of 40, with every photo in it unchanged. That large .ppt was over the free plan's 25 MB, though: decks full of photos often are, and Pro and Business take files up to 100 MB.
Going back, or on to PDF
Need the old format again, for a laptop that still runs PowerPoint 2003? Convert PPTX to PPT, also one step, graded Very good because the old format holds less. Whatever the old format cannot hold is lost on the way back: when we added a sound and a video to a PPTX and saved it as .ppt here, both were dropped.
If people only need to see the slides, convert PowerPoint to PDF instead. It opens a .ppt as it is, so there is no PPTX to make first, and gives one page per slide, leaving out hidden slides and speaker notes.
To reuse the words, convert PowerPoint to Word for an editable document with a page per slide, or convert PowerPoint to text for the words alone. To publish them as one long web document, convert PowerPoint to HTML. Not sure which deck format to send? Our guide to PPT vs PPTX compares the two with PDF.
Questions people ask
How do I convert PPT to PPTX?
Press Select PPT file, or drop the .ppt anywhere on this page, then press Convert to PPTX and download the result. Nothing uploads until you press convert. The free plan converts three decks a day, one at a time, up to 25 MB each, with no account.
Why should I convert PPT to PPTX?
Current PowerPoint opens a .ppt in Compatibility Mode, where Microsoft says some newer features are unavailable, and PowerPoint for the web will show a .ppt but not edit it. Some upload forms and apps also accept only .pptx. If none of that affects you, the .ppt still works as it is.
Will my animations and speaker notes survive?
They did in our tests. A real 71-slide deck kept every slide's speaker notes word for word, and our own deck kept a shape that appears on a click, one that flies in, a fade and a push transition, and a hidden slide that stayed hidden. Sound and video were not part of either test, so check those yourself.
Does converting PPT to PPTX make the file smaller?
It did for both our test decks. The real one went from about 40 MB to 20 MB, and every photo in it was copied unchanged, so the saving did not come from lower picture quality. How much smaller depends on the deck.
Can I turn the PPTX back into a PPT later?
Yes. PPTX to PPT does the reverse, also in one step, graded Very good. Anything you add that the old format cannot hold is lost on the way, though: in our test a sound and a video added to a PPTX did not survive the trip back to .ppt.
Is converting PPT to PPTX free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your PPT and the PPTX we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the PPTX look exactly like the PPT?
This pair grades as “Exact”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
