An exact copy, pixel for pixel

To change GIF to PNG, drop the GIF on this page and press Convert to PNG. There is nothing to set. This free GIF to PNG converter works in your browser: it copies every pixel of the picture into a PNG, which is why the route is graded Exact, and the GIF is never uploaded.

Every see-through part of the GIF stays see-through in the PNG. The colours stay the same too: a GIF holds at most 256 colours, and the PNG shows exactly those, with no more and no fewer. What changes is the room to grow. A PNG stores full colour, so whatever you add while editing it afterwards is no longer squeezed into 256 colours.

To batch convert GIF to PNG, select up to 100 GIFs or drop them on the page together. Each PNG keeps its name, so logo.gif is saved as logo.png. Save them one at a time, or press Download all (ZIP) to get every PNG in one file.

Got other pictures to turn into PNG? The PNG converter opens HEIC, WebP, BMP and more. A TIFF scan of several pages is better off where you can convert TIFF to PNG, since that page saves every page as a PNG of its own.

Animated GIFs: one frame or every frame

An animated GIF becomes a still PNG of its first frame, as the line under the heading says. The other frames are left out, so the PNG can be much smaller than the animation: in our test a 1.4 MB clip of 20 frames gave a PNG of 91 to 121 KB, depending on the browser.

For every frame, or one frame from later in the animation, open the GIF in GIF to frames. It saves every frame, every few frames or the frames you pick, as PNG, JPG or WebP. Several frames come together in one ZIP, numbered in order; a single frame comes as one picture.

Tip: Want it to keep moving? Choose GIF to WebP from the related conversions below. The WebP keeps every frame, its timing and its loop, and a photo-like clip usually comes out much smaller than the GIF.

When to keep the GIF instead

Keep the GIF when the picture has to move, because a PNG from this page is a still. Keep it too when file size matters most: each still GIF in our tests grew as a PNG, since the browser saves the PNG in full colour rather than in a 256-colour palette.

Choose PNG when you will edit the picture, when an app or upload form asks for PNG, or for a still with clean, hard edges such as a logo, an icon or a chart. For a photo-like GIF that only needs to be small, convert GIF to JPG instead: our 655 KB photo GIF became a 137 KB JPG, but a JPG loses a little detail and fills see-through areas with white. JPEG vs PNG explains which format suits which picture.

Need to go back the other way for a site or a chat app that only takes GIF? Convert PNG to GIF, keeping in mind that the GIF is cut down to 256 colours again.

Questions people ask

How do I change a GIF to PNG?

Select or drop the GIF here, or up to 100 of them, and press Convert to PNG. There are no settings to choose. Then press Download to save the PNG, or Download all (ZIP) for several. The GIF stays on your device.

Will the see-through parts of my GIF stay see-through?

Yes. In our tests every transparent pixel of the GIF was still transparent in the PNG. A GIF pixel is either fully see-through or solid, so the PNG has the same hard edges; it does not smooth them. Only a JPG would fill those areas with white.

What happens to an animated GIF when it becomes a PNG?

You get a still PNG of its first frame, and the rest of the animation is left out. To save every frame, or a frame from later on, use GIF to frames. To keep the animation, convert the GIF to WebP instead.

Will the PNG have more colours than the GIF?

No. The PNG copies the GIF's pixels, so it shows the same colours, and any banding or speckles from the GIF's 256-colour limit stay. The gain is for later: the PNG stores full colour, so edits you make to it are not cut back to 256 colours.

Will the PNG take up more space than the GIF?

For a still GIF, usually yes. In our tests the PNG was about 1.8 to 2.6 times the size of the GIF: a 655 KB photo GIF became 1.2 MB in Firefox and 1.6 MB in Chrome. An animated GIF can give a smaller PNG, because only its first frame is kept.

Can I save a frame other than the first as a PNG?

Yes, in GIF to frames. Under Keep, choose Pick frames, press Select none, click the frame you want and press Save frames. PNG is already chosen under Save as, and one frame is saved as one picture instead of a ZIP.

Is converting GIF to PNG free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The GIF is read and the PNG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the PNG look exactly like the GIF?

This pair grades as “Exact”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
