Why some apps will not open a WebP
Drop a WebP on this page and you get a JPG back, made on your device. That is the quick way to change WebP to JPG when an app, a photo editor or an upload form will not take the file you saved from a website.
WebP is a format built for the web, with files smaller than JPEG, so web pages often send their pictures as .webp. Older software and some upload forms were made before it and still refuse it. A JPG opens almost everywhere, so turning the WebP file to JPG is usually all it takes.
JPG and JPEG are one format with two spellings. The file is saved with .jpg on the end, and a form that asks for JPEG takes it as it is.
The same trouble comes up with other formats. Convert GIF to JPG when a form refuses a GIF, or convert SVG to JPG to turn a logo or drawing into pixels. Going the other way, for a site that asks for WebP, convert JPG to WebP.

The web’s efficient format. Smaller than JPEG, refused by older software.
Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.
JPEG compresses the picture and has no transparency, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.
Good to know about converting WebP to JPEG
- JPEG opens almost everywhere, including older software and upload forms that do not accept WebP.
- An animated WebP becomes a still JPEG of its first frame.
- Transparent areas are filled with white, and camera details stored in the file are removed.
Converting a whole folder of WebP files
In the file picker, open the folder and select all the WebP files in it, or drag them onto the page. A batch holds up to 100 files; add more and the page keeps the first 100 and tells you. A file that is not a WebP is left out, with a note saying so.
The files are converted one after another on your device, all at the Image quality you picked. Each JPG keeps its name with .jpg in place of .webp, so beach-day.webp comes back as beach-day.jpg. Save them one at a time, or press Download all (ZIP) to get every JPG in a single ZIP file.
When a PNG is the better choice
JPG is lossy: it makes a small file by dropping detail your eye rarely misses, and it has no transparency, so see-through areas come out white. That suits photos. For a logo, a sticker or a cut-out with a transparent background, choose WebP to PNG from the related conversions below: the PNG keeps every pixel and the transparency, at a larger file size. A logo can also be traced into vector shapes that stay sharp at any size with PNG to SVG, which opens WebP files too.
| JPEG quality | Good for | |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller | 60 out of 100 | Forms and emails with a size limit |
| Balanced (the default) | 80 out of 100 | Most photos |
| Best | 95 out of 100 | A picture you will edit again |
Balanced uses quality 80, the setting that our look at how JPG compression works finds hard to tell from the original on a screen. For the photo or screenshot rule in full, read when to send a JPG and when a PNG. If the JPG is still too big for a form, compress the image to a target size in KB.
Questions people ask
How do I convert WebP to JPG?
Drop the WebP on this page, or select it; the file never leaves your device. Pick Smaller, Balanced or Best under Image quality, press Convert to JPEG and save the JPG that comes out.
How do I save a WebP image as a JPG?
A web page cannot change how your browser saves pictures from other sites, so save the picture as the .webp file the site sent. Then select it here and convert it: sunset.webp comes back as sunset.jpg, with the rest of the name unchanged.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so every see-through area is filled with white when the JPG is made. To keep the transparent background, convert the WebP to PNG instead, for example in the PNG converter.
Will converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A little. JPEG compresses the picture, which is why this route is graded Very good rather than Exact: fine detail is lost, but it looks right at normal size. Best keeps the most detail, in a larger file. Any loss already in the WebP stays, because converting cannot add detail back.
What happens to an animated WebP?
You get its first frame as a still JPEG. JPEG cannot hold an animation.
Is converting WebP to JPG free?
Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
What happens to my files?
Nothing leaves your device. The WebP is read and the JPG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.
Will the JPG look exactly like the WebP?
This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.
How large can my file be?
As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
