TIF or TIFF: one format, two spellings
Drop a .tif or .tiff file on this page and you get a JPG back, made in your browser, so the scan never leaves your device. The two endings are one format, so going from TIF to JPG works exactly like TIFF to JPG.
A TIFF is what scanners and archives make: large, detailed and often refused by email, upload forms and web browsers. A JPG opens almost everywhere and is usually much smaller, which is why people change TIFF to JPG before they send a scan. Our guide to what a TIFF file is explains why scanners still make them.
How to convert TIFF to JPEG
- 1Select or drop your TIFF
It stays on your device.

Nothing was uploaded, so there is nothing to delete.
Print and archive pixels, usually large, trusted by scanners.
Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.
JPEG compresses the picture and has no transparency, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.
What changes when a TIFF becomes a JPG
JPEG compresses the picture: the file gets smaller, often by a lot, and fine detail is lost, though the page still looks right at normal size. The size in pixels stays the same. JPEG has no transparency, so any see-through areas come out white, and details stored with the picture, such as the camera or the date, are not copied into the JPG.
| Image quality | JPEG quality | Our JPG | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller | 60 out of 100 | 600 KB | A portal or an email with a size cap |
| Balanced (the default) | 80 out of 100 | 779 KB | Most scans and photos |
| Best | 95 out of 100 | 1.18 MB | Small print that must stay easy to read |
Your own files will differ: the more detail on a page, the bigger the JPG, and a TIFF that is already compressed shrinks less. Stored with lossless LZW compression, the same page was about 1.1 MB as a TIFF and still 779 KB as a JPG. In our test the JPG also left out the 300 DPI note, so a program may report 72 DPI and a larger print size. The size in pixels is unchanged; only that note is gone.
For a drawing, a chart or a screenshot where every pixel must stay exact, convert TIFF to PNG instead: PNG loses nothing, in a bigger file. When to send a JPG and when a PNG explains the choice.
Multi-page and unusual TIFF files
One TIFF can hold several pages, as a scanned letter or a fax often does. Before you convert, the page says how many pages your file has. Every page is converted into its own JPG, and you get them together in a ZIP named after the file. In our test, a three-page letter.tif came back as letter.zip, holding letter-p001.jpg, letter-p002.jpg and letter-p003.jpg.
The one limit is your browser’s memory. A TIFF with more pages than it can hold at once is cut short, and the page tells you before you convert how many pages fit and how many are left out. If the scan should stay one document, convert TIFF to PDF: every page goes into a single PDF, in order.
Converting a batch of scans
To batch convert TIFF to JPG, select every file in the folder, or drag them onto the page. Up to 100 files go in one batch. Past that, the page keeps the first 100 and says so, and anything that is not a TIFF is set aside with a note.
Your device works through them in turn, every one at the same Image quality. Each JPG takes its TIFF’s name, so invoice-04.tif comes back as invoice-04.jpg. Save the JPGs singly, or press Download all (ZIP) for one file holding them all; a TIFF of several pages arrives inside it as a ZIP of its own.
Need the other direction? Convert JPG to TIFF when a printer or an archive asks for TIFF. Other pictures that will not open have pages of their own: convert WebP to JPG for a picture saved from a website, or convert SVG to JPG for a logo or a drawing.
Questions people ask
How do I convert TIFF to JPG?
Select the TIFF, or drop it on this page; it is read on your device, not uploaded. Choose an Image quality (Balanced suits most scans), press Convert to JPEG, then save the result. A TIFF of several pages comes back as a ZIP, one JPG per page.
Does it matter if my file ends in .tif instead of .tiff?
No. Both endings mean the same format, and renaming one to the other changes nothing inside the file. This page takes either, and the picture you save ends in .jpg.
What if my TIFF has several pages?
Every page is converted: each page becomes its own JPG, and you get them together in a ZIP named after the file, so scan.tif gives scan.zip with scan-p001.jpg, scan-p002.jpg and so on. The one exception is a TIFF with more pages than your browser can hold at once: before you convert, the page says how many of them fit.
Does a TIFF lose quality when it becomes a JPG?
Some detail goes, yes. JPEG throws away fine detail to make the file small, so this page grades the route Very good, not Exact; at normal viewing size the scan looks the same. Choosing Best keeps more detail in a bigger file, and TIFF to PNG, graded Exact, keeps every pixel.
Can I convert TIFF to JPG on a Mac?
Yes. This TIFF to JPG converter runs in a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox on your Mac: there is nothing to install, and the TIFF never leaves your Mac. Several files, and every page of a multi-page TIFF, convert in one go.
Is converting TIFF to JPG free?
Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
What happens to my files?
Nothing leaves your device. The TIFF is read and the JPG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.
Will the JPG look exactly like the TIFF?
This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.
How large can my file be?
As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
