What size your PNG will be

To change SVG to PNG, select or drop the SVG on this page and press Convert to PNG. The PNG is drawn at the width and height written in the SVG file itself, so an icon set to 24 by 24 pixels becomes a 24 × 24 PNG. To draw it bigger, pick 2×, 4× or a width in pixels under Size.

  • Width and height in pixels are used as they are. In pt, pc, mm, cm or in, they are worked out at 96 pixels to the inch: an SVG 50 mm wide gave a PNG 189 pixels wide in our test.
  • With no width and height, or with percentages, the size comes from the viewBox. A viewBox of 0 0 300 150 gave a 300 × 150 PNG.
  • With neither, the PNG is 1,024 pixels square.
  • Anything over 8,192 pixels on its long side is scaled down to fit, keeping its shape: a 10,000 × 5,000 SVG came out at 8,192 × 4,096.

Because the SVG is drawn fresh at that size, edges stay crisp instead of being stretched from a smaller picture, which is why the route is graded Picture-perfect. The catch is that the PNG is now made of pixels and no longer scales the way the SVG did, so make it the size you need. For the difference in full, read raster vs vector.

Tip: Need a larger, high-resolution PNG? Pick 2×, 4× or a width in pixels under Size before you convert. The SVG is drawn again at that size rather than stretched, so it stays sharp: our 24-pixel icon at 4× came out as a crisp 96 × 96 PNG. The long side stops at 8,192 pixels, and the result says when it did.

What you are starting with

Drawing instructions, not pixels. Scales to a billboard without blurring.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels with transparency. Screenshots, logos, anything with an edge.

Worth knowing

The result looks right down to the pixel, but text stops being text and drawings stop being vectors.

Transparency, colours and fonts

Wherever the SVG draws nothing, the PNG has transparent pixels, so a logo sits cleanly on a coloured slide or web page. A background the SVG paints itself, such as a white rectangle, is kept as it is. PNG is lossless, so flat colours and thin lines keep exactly the pixels they were drawn as.

The SVG is drawn the way a web page shows a picture. Scripts inside it do not run, and files it links to from elsewhere are not loaded. A linked photo is missing from the PNG, and your browser may draw a small broken-picture icon in its place. Text set in a linked web font comes out in a fallback: the next font the SVG names, such as sans-serif, or the browser's default font, usually a serif, when it names none. Fonts installed on your device, such as Arial, are used.

Tip: To keep a design exactly, prepare the SVG before you export it: turn text into outlines (paths), and embed photos in the file instead of linking them. In our tests an embedded picture was drawn and a linked one was not.

Converting a folder of SVG icons

To batch convert SVG to PNG, open the folder in the file picker, select all the SVG files and add them together, up to 100 at a time. They are converted one after another on your device, each at its own size, and each PNG keeps its file name with .png on the end, so logo.svg is saved as logo.png. With two or more, Download all (ZIP) saves them in one file, whatafile-converted.zip.

Every PNG takes the size of its own SVG times the Size you pick, so at 4× an icon drawn at 24 pixels gives a 96-pixel PNG. A width in pixels makes every PNG in the batch that wide instead. Stretching a PNG afterwards only blurs it, so pick the Size before you convert.

PNG, JPG or WebP for your SVG

PNG suits most SVG files: logos, icons, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or a see-through background. It is the format to pick when an app, upload form or slide will not take the SVG as an image. JPG and WebP compress the picture, losing a little detail, and JPG has no transparency at all.

When a form asks for a JPG, convert SVG to JPG instead. For a picture on a web page, convert SVG to WebP, which keeps the transparency. And if you are weighing the first two, read JPG or PNG: which to send.

Other files become PNG here too: convert TIFF to PNG for a scan or a print file, or open HEIC, AVIF, BMP and SVG files in the PNG converter, which shows each format's file size before you choose.

Questions people ask

How do I convert SVG to PNG?

Select or drop your SVG on this page; it stays on your device. Check the route, SVG to PNG, and its Picture-perfect grade, then press Convert to PNG and Download to save the PNG. Add up to 100 files to convert several at once.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Yes. Areas where the SVG draws nothing stay see-through in the PNG. A background the SVG paints itself, such as a white rectangle, stays in the picture. Only a JPG fills empty areas with white.

How do I get a high-resolution PNG from an SVG?

Pick a Size before you convert: 2×, 4× or a width in pixels, up to 8,192 pixels on the long side. The SVG is drawn again at that size, so it stays sharp: a 24-pixel icon at 4× came out as a crisp 96 × 96 PNG in our test.

Can I convert SVG to PNG on a Mac?

Yes, in a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox on your Mac, with nothing to install. This SVG to PNG converter works inside the browser, so the file never leaves your computer.

Can I turn the PNG back into an SVG?

Not into the original drawing, because the PNG holds only pixels. The PNG to SVG tool traces a PNG or JPG into new vector shapes. It works well for a logo or icon in flat colours, and poorly for a photo.

Is converting SVG to PNG free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The SVG is read and the PNG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the PNG look exactly like the SVG?

This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
