Why turn a CSV into a PDF

To convert CSV to PDF, press Select CSV file and pick your .csv, then press Convert to PDF and download the result. Each line of the file becomes a row of a table, with every value in its own column, on A4 pages numbered at the bottom.

A CSV is what banks, shops, booking systems and databases export: the data and nothing else. Opened in a text editor it is a wall of commas, and not everyone has a spreadsheet app to open it in. A PDF of the same rows can be read, printed and attached to an email by anyone.

Want to sort, total or colour the rows first? Convert CSV to Excel, make your changes, then turn the workbook into pages with Excel to PDF.

What you are starting with

A table as plain text, one row a line, its values split by commas. No formatting and no formulas.

What you are getting

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

Worth knowing

The rows are laid out as a table on A4 pages, and columns that do not fit continue on the next page. Numbers and dates are read as a spreadsheet reads them: leading zeros are dropped, and a date written day first may be read month first.

Good to know about converting CSV to PDF

  • The separator is found from the file, so comma and semicolon files both give proper columns. Values in double quotes keep their commas.
  • UTF-8 files, with or without a byte order mark, and older Windows text both print with their accents.
  • Pages are A4 portrait, numbered at the bottom, in one plain font with no borders. Columns that do not fit across continue on further pages.
  • Values made only of digits lose their leading zeros (00123 prints as 123), and a day-first date such as 05/01/2026 can be read as 1 May.
  • A value with a line break inside it prints its first line over the row above.

How your CSV is read

We converted test files of the kinds spreadsheets and other systems export, and checked every PDF. The separator and the text encoding are worked out from the file itself, so there is nothing to set: a file Excel saved with semicolons, as it does in much of Europe, came out in columns, and so did one saved as older Windows text, with its accents. A value in double quotes keeps its commas and its own quotes, so "Smith, John" stays in one column.

Numbers and dates

Values are read the way a spreadsheet reads them, and a few change on the way:

  • Leading zeros are dropped: a zip code of 00123 prints as 123. A code with a letter or a dash in it, such as 90-001, prints as written.
  • A date written year first, such as 2026-10-28, prints as written.
  • A date written day first can be read month first: 05/01/2026, meant as 5 January, printed as 05/01/26, which is 1 May. One that cannot be a month first, such as 28/10/2026, prints as written.
  • A number longer than 15 digits loses its last ones: 9999999999999999 printed as 1E+016.
Tip: To print every value exactly as typed, open the CSV in Excel with Data > From Text/CSV and turn off data type detection, save it as a workbook, then convert that with Excel to PDF.

Long and wide files

Every row comes through. In our tests, 3,000 rows of four columns made a 57-page PDF, and a file of 40 columns and 50 rows a 5-page one: the columns that do not fit across a page continue on the next pages. The first row is not repeated at the top of each page.

A file near the 25 MB free limit takes minutes and makes a very large PDF. Our 24 MB test file of about 310,000 rows took seven minutes and came back as a 530 MB PDF. For data that size, a workbook is quicker and far smaller: CSV to Excel made an 11 MB file in under half a minute.

A value with a line break inside it prints its first line over the row above, so replace those line breaks before you convert. For a document rather than a table, convert text to PDF sets a .txt file as pages of plain text.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a CSV file to PDF?

Press Select CSV file, or drop the .csv on this page, then press Convert to PDF and download the result. The free plan converts three files a day, one at a time, up to 25 MB each, with no account. Both files are deleted from our server after 24 hours.

Does it work with semicolon-separated files?

Yes. The separator is worked out from the file itself, so a CSV that uses semicolons, as Excel saves them in much of Europe, comes out in columns just like one with commas.

Why did my zip codes lose their leading zeros?

A value made only of digits is read as a number, and a number has no leading zeros, so 00123 prints as 123. Values with a letter or a dash in them print as written.

Can I make the table look nicer?

A CSV holds no formatting, so the PDF is a plain table: one font, no borders and no colours. For headings, colours or a total row, convert the CSV to Excel, format it in your spreadsheet app, then convert it with Excel to PDF.

Is the first row printed as a heading?

It prints as the first row of the table, in the same plain text as the rest, since a CSV has no way to mark a heading. It is not repeated at the top of later pages.

Is converting CSV to PDF free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your CSV and the PDF we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PDF look exactly like the CSV?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
