A quick jump, a pour of water or a golf swing is over before you can see it. A slow mo video lets you watch the moment properly. This page opens the speed tool at 0.5×, so you can turn a clip into a slow motion video in a few clicks.
The video stays on your device, and you can use the slow motion effect on as many clips as you like. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account and no watermark.
Read on to see how much to slow down a video for each kind of clip, what to expect from the picture and the sound, and how to get a smooth result.
How to make a slow motion video
The tool starts at 0.5×, which is half speed, so you can make a video slow motion straight away. The clip takes twice as long to play. You can go slower or milder before you save.
- Drop your video onto the tool. Several clips at once are fine.
- Check the Speed slider. It is on 0.5× slow motion. Drag it to 0.25× for a stronger effect, or to 0.75× for a gentle one.
- Look at the New length line. It tells you how long the slow version will be.
- Decide about Keep the sound. Slow audio can sound odd for some clips, so you may prefer to switch it off.
- Press Change speed and save the MP4.
The saved file ends with the speed, for example _0.5x.mp4, and your original stays exactly as it was.
How much to slow down a video: 0.75×, 0.5× or 0.25×
Three slow speeds are on the slider. Each stretches the clip by a different amount, and each suits a different kind of moment.
| Speed | Plays | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75× | A quarter slower | A gentle, dreamy feel; slowing speech a little |
| 0.5× | Half speed | Sports, tricks, dance, pouring and splashing |
| 0.25× | Quarter speed | Very fast actions that you want to study frame by frame |
A 10-second clip at 0.5× becomes 20 seconds. At 0.25× it becomes 40 seconds. Slow down a video only when the clip is short enough that you would still want to watch it at that length.
What to expect from the picture
This tool plays the frames you already have more slowly. It does not invent new frames in between. A clip filmed at a high frame rate, such as 60 fps from an action camera, will look smooth at half speed. A clip filmed at an ordinary frame rate can look a little steppy at quarter speed.
Running a 30 fps clip through a 60fps converter first will not help. It repeats the pictures the clip already has, so the slowed result looks the same. Smooth slow motion comes from the rate the camera recorded at.
The reverse matters too. Converting a clip from 60fps to 24fps or 60fps to 30fps drops pictures, and slow motion needs every picture the camera caught. Slow the 60 fps original first, and change the rate afterwards only if a site asks for one. The change video frame rate tool shows your clip's current rate on its Source line.
Trim first to slow down only the moment
Slow motion works best on a short moment, not a whole clip. Cut the part you care about with trim video, then slow it down. You will get a smaller file and a faster save.
Sound in a slow motion video
Slowing down audio normally lowers its pitch, so a voice sounds deep and drawn out. With Keep the sound on, this tool stretches the audio to the new length and keeps the pitch the same. Speech at half speed stays recognisable, only slower.
Keeping the sound makes the save slower. If you do not need the audio, turn the switch off. The picture can often be re-timed directly, so the save is quicker.
- Dialogue or ambient noise you want to keep: leave Keep the sound on.
- A sports or action clip where slow audio would be strange: switch it off.
- A clip that you will set to music later: switch it off, then add a music track later.
Slow mo video ideas that work well
Slow motion is most useful when something happens too quickly for the eye. These are the clips that gain the most from a half speed video, with a note on which speed to try first.
- Sport and fitness: a jump, a kick, a throw or a lift. Start at 0.5× and look at your form.
- Dance and movement: a spin or a turn that you want to learn or show off. Try 0.5×.
- Cooking and pouring: liquid moving, flames, steam. Try 0.5× for a calm, rich feel.
- Pets and children: a leap, a splash or a first step. Try 0.75× for a gentle result.
- Teaching and review: a fast hand movement in a craft or repair. Use 0.25× so learners can follow each stage.
Half speed video or quarter speed video?
Half speed is the safe choice. It is clearly slow, yet the motion still feels connected. Quarter speed video is better when you want to study a movement, but it makes every second of the original last four seconds. Short clips are best at that setting.
Check the New length line
As you move the slider, the panel shows Length now and New length. A 30-second clip at 0.25× runs for two minutes. If that is longer than you want to watch or share, trim the clip before you slow it down.
Share and finish your slow motion clip
Once the clip is slow, there are a few common next steps. Which one you need depends on where the video is going.
- To post it in a message, make it lighter with the compress video tool. A slow video is longer, so the file is often bigger.
- To turn the moment into a silent, repeating picture, convert it with the video to GIF tool.
- To make it play over and over in one file, use the loop video tool.
Each of these runs in your browser in the same way, with no upload.
Free, private slow motion that runs on your device
The slow motion effect is made by your own browser. The video is not sent to a server, and the server does no video work.
The tool is free and has no watermark. Video tools are not counted in the free daily limit, which applies to document conversions only.
You can slow down an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV and more, and the result is always saved as an MP4. Most videos have no size limit.
Some files, such as certain AVI or WMV videos, take longer, and those can be up to 2 GB. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
Slow down your clip now
To make a slow mo video, drop your clip in, keep the 0.5× setting or change it, and press Change speed. You get a new MP4 and your original is untouched.
Use the tool at the top of this page. If you want the opposite effect, try speed up video, or use change video speed to start from any speed.
