Changing PDF pages into PNG images

To convert PDF to PNG, select or drop your PDF on this page, pick a Resolution and press Convert to PNG. Every page becomes a PNG image of its own. A one-page PDF gives you one PNG, and a longer PDF gives you a ZIP with one PNG per page, in page order.

Most people change PDF to PNG when a page has to travel as a picture: a slide for a presentation, a chart for a report, a page to share where a PDF will not open. This PDF to PNG converter names the files after your PDF, so report.pdf comes back as report.png, or as report.zip holding report-p001.png, report-p002.png and so on.

The page limit is 100. A longer PDF is refused as soon as it is sent, with a message that says how many pages it has, so you can split it and convert the parts.

Going the other way, convert PNG to PDF to put a picture back on a page. Other files become PNG pictures here too: convert Word to PNG for a .docx or .doc, convert PowerPoint to PNG for slides, convert ODT to PNG for a LibreOffice text document, convert HTML to PNG for a saved web page, and convert text to PNG for a plain .txt file.

How to convert PDF to PNG

What you are starting with

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels on a solid page, so text and lines stay crisp. No see-through background.

Worth knowing

The result looks right down to the pixel, but text stops being text and drawings stop being vectors.

Good to know about converting PDF to PNG

  • PNG is lossless, so text and line art keep sharp edges. It suits diagrams, slides and anything with small type better than JPEG.
  • A one-page PDF gives one PNG; a longer one gives a ZIP of the pages, numbered in order.
  • At the default 150 DPI an A4 page comes out about 1240 × 1755 pixels; choose 300 DPI for printing.
  • A page that is mostly a photo makes a far larger PNG than JPEG (2.2 MB against 272 KB in our test), so PDF to JPEG gives smaller files there. For pages of text, which is smaller depends on how full the page is.
  • Want a smaller PDF rather than pictures of its pages? The PDF size reducer keeps it a PDF, with its text still selectable.

Picking a resolution for sharp text

Resolution, in dots per inch (DPI), sets how many pixels each page gets. You can pick 96, 150 or 300 DPI, and 150 is the default. More DPI means sharper small print and a bigger file. These are the sizes one A4 page of text came out at in our tests:

One A4 page of text at each resolution
ResolutionPixelsPNG sizeGood for
96 DPIAbout 794 × 112312 KBScreens, email and quick previews
150 DPI (default)About 1240 × 175522 KBSlides, documents and most screens
300 DPIAbout 2480 × 350858 KBPrinting, and zooming in on small print

For a PDF to PNG in high resolution, 300 DPI is the highest setting and the one to pick for printing. 600 or 1200 DPI is not offered here. Going from 150 to 300 DPI made a page about two and a half times bigger in our tests, for a page of text and for a photo alike.

Backgrounds, file size and when JPG is better

Each page becomes a PNG on a white background, not a transparent one. That holds even where the PDF page itself is empty: a test page with nothing painted behind its text still came back white. For a transparent PNG from a PDF, convert it here first, then remove the white background from the PNG.

How big the PNG gets depends on what is on the page. Text compresses well: 22 KB for an A4 page at 150 DPI. A full-page photo does not: the same size of page came out at 1,030 KB as a PNG and 144 KB as a JPG at Balanced quality. For pages that are mostly photos, PDF to JPG gives far smaller files. For text, charts and diagrams, PNG keeps every edge clean.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a PDF to PNG?

Select or drop your PDF on this page, choose a Resolution (150 DPI unless you change it) and press Convert to PNG. Then download the result: one PNG for a one-page PDF, or a ZIP with a PNG for each page.

Can I convert a PDF to PNG in high resolution?

Yes, up to 300 DPI, the setting to pick for printing. An A4 page then comes out at about 2480 × 3508 pixels. Higher settings, such as 600 or 1200 DPI, are not offered.

Can I get a transparent PNG from a PDF?

No. Every page is drawn on white, even where the PDF page has no background of its own, so the PNG has no see-through areas. You can make the white transparent afterwards with the Remove white background tool.

Can I convert a PDF to PNG without signing up?

Yes. No account is needed: drop the PDF and download the PNGs. Without one you can run three conversions a day, each PDF up to 25 MB, and a whole PDF counts as one conversion however many pages it has.

How many pages can I convert to PNG at once?

Up to 100 in one PDF, and every page comes back as its own PNG inside one ZIP. A PDF with more pages is refused before it converts, so split it into parts first.

Can I still select or search the text in the PNG?

No. Each page becomes a picture, so its text cannot be selected or searched. To keep the words, use PDF to Text or PDF to Word.

Is converting PDF to PNG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your PDF and the PNG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PNG look exactly like the PDF?

This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
