Extracting text from a PDF in one step
To extract text from a PDF, select or drop it on this page, pick All pages or First page only under What to include, and press Convert to TXT. The PDF to text step runs once and gives you a plain .txt file named after your PDF, so report.pdf comes back as report.txt.
Use it as a PDF text extractor when you want the words and not the page: a quote for an email, a long report to search, or text for another program to read. When the conversion is done, the text shows on the page with a Copy text button, so to copy text from the PDF you can paste it straight where you need it. You also get the .txt file, and a text over 100,000 characters is a download only.
Going the other way, convert text to PDF to lay a .txt file out on pages. Other documents turn into plain text here too: convert Word to text, convert RTF to text, convert HTML to text or convert PowerPoint to text.

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.
Just the words. No fonts, no layout, no arguments.
You keep every word but lose the layout: fonts and images are dropped, and text in columns comes out one column after another.
Text from a scanned page
A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, with no words in it to lift. When a PDF has no text at all, the English words on its pages are read first and go into the .txt file. With First page only, only that page is read.
Reading a scan can get a character wrong, so check names and numbers. In our test of a scanned A4 page, every English word came back right, but the Ø in a name was read as @ and a stray bracket appeared before one number.
What the text file keeps and loses
To change a PDF to text is to keep the words and leave the page behind. Letters such as é, Ø and £ come through, since the file is saved as UTF-8 (a standard text encoding). Lines break where they broke on the page, so a paragraph comes back as several lines, and each new page starts after a page-break character.
| Part of the PDF | In the .txt file |
|---|---|
| Words | Every one, in reading order |
| Two columns | The whole left column, then the whole right one |
| Tables | The words of each cell, without the grid; a row can split over lines |
| Fonts, bold and italic | Left out |
| Pictures | Left out |
| Links | The words stay; the web address is dropped |
For a table you want to keep as a table, convert PDF to Word instead. When the PDF has real text, its tables come back as Word tables with their cells. Our guide on how to convert a PDF to Word with tables intact shows what can still break and how to fix it. If you only need to convert a PDF to a text file for searching or pasting, the .txt file is the lighter choice.
Text from photos and screenshots
For a picture rather than a PDF, use Image to Text. It reads the English text in a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF or SVG and shows it on the page with a Copy text button, or saves it as a .txt file. That suits a screenshot or a photo of one page, when you want the words on screen straight away. To turn a photo of a page into a Word document you can edit, use JPG to Word.
Questions people ask
How do I extract text from a PDF?
Select or drop your PDF on this page; nothing uploads until you press convert. Under What to include, keep All pages or pick First page only, press Convert to TXT and download the .txt file. Three conversions a day are free, each PDF up to 25 MB.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to text?
Yes. When a PDF has no text in it, the English words you can see on its pages are read first and go into the .txt file. A character can be misread, so check names and numbers. A PDF that mixes typed and scanned pages is not read this way: only its typed pages come back.
Can I take the text from just the first page?
Yes. Choose First page only under What to include before you convert. Other single pages and page ranges are not offered; All pages gives the text of the whole PDF.
Is PDF to TXT the same as PDF to text?
Yes. TXT is the file ending of a plain text file, so both give the same result: a .txt file that holds only the words and opens in any text editor.
Will tables and columns survive in the text file?
Their words will, their layout will not. Columns are read one after the other, and a table comes back as lines of words without its grid. To keep a table as a table, convert the PDF to Word instead: when the PDF has real text, tables come back as Word tables.
Is there a page limit for PDF to text?
No page limit is set for text. In our test a 417-page PDF with real text came back as one .txt file. The file size limit still applies: 25 MB on the free plan, 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Is converting PDF to Text free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your PDF and the Text we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the Text look exactly like the PDF?
This pair grades as “Words only”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
