Nowhere. It stays on this device.

The picture is read from your disk and changed inside this tab. Close the tab and nothing is left anywhere else.

What it takes
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO

It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox. An iPhone HEIC photo needs a reader of about 1.5 MB, loaded once. Very large pictures may be too big for your browser.

A meme is a picture with a bold line at the top, another at the bottom, and the joke in the gap between them. This meme generator puts those lines on your own picture: a photo from your phone, a screenshot, a drawing. Use it as a meme creator for the photos you already have: to create a meme, all you need is the picture and a line or two of text. There are no stock templates to choose from, so the picture is always yours.

Type the top and bottom text, choose whether it sits on the picture or on white bars, and save a JPG or PNG. Long lines shrink to fit, so nothing runs off the edge. It runs in your browser, it is free, and nothing is uploaded. Below, each control is explained, with the two styles side by side.

How to create a meme from your own picture

  1. Press Select image, or drop a picture onto the page. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO and iPhone HEIC photos all open.
  2. Type the Top text and the Bottom text. Each is one line of up to 100 characters, and you can leave either one empty.
  3. Pick a Style: On the picture, or White bars above and below.
  4. Change the Text size, Font, Colour or Outline if you like. Capital letters is on, as in classic memes.
  5. Pick JPG or PNG under Save as, then press Make meme.
  6. Save the meme. Its name ends in _meme, so the original picture is left as it was.

Until you type, the stage shows TOP TEXT and BOTTOM TEXT in faded letters, right where the lines will go. If both are empty, the panel asks you to Type the top or the bottom text first. The lines on the stage are measured in the same font and laid out by the same code as the saved file, so the meme you see is the meme you get.

The meme generator works on one picture at a time. Press Replace to swap in a different one, and type your lines again for it.

The meme generator only adds words, so change the picture itself first in another tool, save it, and open the saved copy here:

Top and bottom text that always fits

Both lines are centred, and each sits a small margin from its edge of the picture: 3 % of the picture's height. Text size runs from 4 to 20 % of the picture's height, in steps of half a percent, and starts at 10 %.

A long line does not run off the sides. As you type, it shrinks until it fits 92 % of the width. It stops shrinking at 4 % of the picture's height, and if it is still too wide then, it wraps onto a second line at a space. Each line is fitted on its own, so a short top line stays big while a long bottom line gets smaller.

  • Capital letters, on by default, draws every letter as a capital, whatever you type. Switch it off to keep small letters.
  • Font offers Anton, a tall, narrow face in the bold style memes are known for, and Inter Bold, a cleaner sans serif.
  • Colour offers White, Ink and Yellow, or any colour from the + swatch.
  • Outline can be None, Thin or Thick. Its colour is chosen for you: black round light text, white round dark text.
Tip: Short lines hit harder. If a line has shrunk a lot, try cutting a word or two rather than making the text size smaller.

A meme with white bars, or text on the picture

Style decides where the text goes. On the picture is the classic look: white capitals with a thick outline over the top and bottom of the photo. White bars above and below leaves the photo untouched and puts the text on plain white strips added to it, which suits screenshots and photos with detail near the edges.

In a meme with white bars, each bar is as tall as its text plus a margin above and below, so a long line that wraps gets a deeper bar. A line you leave empty gets no bar at all: type only the bottom text and the meme has one white bar, under the picture.

When you switch to White bars, the text turns Ink with no outline, since white letters would vanish on white. If you had already chosen your own colour or outline, your choice is kept. Switching back to On the picture works the same way.

Save as JPG or PNG, with no watermark

The saved meme carries no watermark, logo or site name: nothing is added beyond the lines and bars you chose. You need no account to make or save it.

Save as offers JPG and PNG. JPG is the default: it is saved at high quality and makes a smaller file, which suits sharing in chats and feeds. PNG keeps every pixel, so the edges of the letters stay crisp, and it is the better pick for screenshots and drawings with flat colour. The Result line shows the format, the size in pixels and roughly how big the file will be.

The saved meme is drawn fresh, so it carries none of the location, camera or date details the original photo may hold. A sideways phone photo comes out the right way up.

  • The meme is made in your browser. The picture is never uploaded, and the words you type never leave your device.
  • It is free. Image tools are not counted in the free daily limit, which applies to document conversions only.
  • It works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

After you make a meme, Keep going with this picture can take it straight to Compress image for a smaller file. Posting it on Instagram? Resize it to the Instagram post size first.

Questions people ask

How do I make a meme from my own picture?

Press Select image and pick the picture. Type the Top text and the Bottom text, choose On the picture or White bars as the Style, pick JPG or PNG under Save as, and press Make meme. Then save the meme: its name ends in _meme.

Are there meme templates to choose from?

No. This is a custom meme maker for your own picture, so any photo, screenshot or drawing you have can become a meme. Nothing is picked from a library.

Does the meme have a watermark?

No. The JPG or PNG you save shows your picture and your lines, with no logo or site name stamped on it, and you need no account. Image tools are free and are not counted in the free daily limit, which applies to document conversions only.

Can I make a meme with only bottom text?

Yes. Leave Top text empty and type only the bottom line. With White bars, only the bottom bar is added.

Why did my text get smaller as I typed?

Each line shrinks to fit 92 % of the width, so it never runs off the edge. Once it reaches 4 % of the picture's height it stops shrinking and wraps onto a second line instead.

Can I make several memes at once?

No, the meme generator takes one picture at a time. For the same words on a whole set of photos, use Add text to image, which takes up to 100 pictures in one run.
