What you get from each page

To convert ODT to PNG, press Select ODT file or drop the .odt on this page, keep 150 DPI or pick another Resolution, then press Convert to PNG. Every page comes back as a picture of its own. Our one-page Club notice.odt gave Club notice.png, and the three-page minutes.odt gave minutes.zip, holding minutes-p001.png, minutes-p002.png and minutes-p003.png.

There are two steps behind the button. Our server lays the document out as a PDF, then each PDF page is drawn as pixels. The grade is Picture-perfect: the page looks the same, but its words become part of the image, so nobody can select, search or edit them.

PNG is lossless, so small type, table lines and the edge of a logo stay crisp when someone zooms in. That suits a council notice for a website, a page dropped onto a slide, or a form for an upload box that only takes images. The background is always solid: a logo with a see-through background came back on plain white in our test, and a pale yellow page colour set in the document filled the whole image, margins included.

What you are starting with

The open standard. Governments and open-source office suites love it.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels on a solid page, so text and lines stay crisp. No see-through background.

Worth knowing

The result looks right down to the pixel, but text stops being text and drawings stop being vectors.

Choosing a resolution

Resolution, in dots per inch (DPI), decides how many pixels each page gets. This OpenDocument to PNG converter offers 96, 150 or 300 DPI, with 150 picked for you. Our A4 test notice came out like this:

One A4 page of an ODT as a PNG
ResolutionPixelsFile size
96 DPI794 × 112357 KB
150 DPI (default)1241 × 175493 KB
300 DPI2481 × 3508199 KB

A US Letter page comes out at 1275 × 1650 pixels at 150 DPI. Use 96 DPI for a page that will only be seen on screen or sent by email, keep 150 for slides and web pages, and choose 300 for printing.

When PDF or JPG fits better

A PNG is only a picture of the page. If the reader needs to search the text, copy from it or click a link, convert ODT to PDF instead, and every page stays in one file.

Photos make PNGs heavy. A test page filled by one large photo came to 529 KB as a PNG and 77 KB as a JPG at Balanced quality, both at 150 DPI. For pages like that, convert ODT to JPG. For text, tables and line drawings, PNG keeps the edges cleaner.

Other files turn into PNG pages too: convert Word to PNG for a .docx, convert PowerPoint to PNG for one picture per slide, or convert HTML to PNG for a saved web page. To go back, convert PNG to ODT: it reads the words off the picture into a file you can edit. Our notice came back with its text, though one line landed out of place, so check it against the original.

Questions people ask

Can I pick a single page instead of all of them?

No. Every page of the .odt is converted. When there are two or more, open the ZIP and keep the one you need: the files are numbered with three digits, so minutes-p002.png is page 2.

Which DPI suits an ODT page?

Keep 150 DPI, the default, for screens, slides and web pages: an A4 page comes out at 1241 × 1754 pixels. Choose 96 DPI for small images to email, or 300 DPI, 2481 × 3508 pixels on A4, for printing.

Can someone copy or change the words in the PNG?

No. The words are pixels now, so they cannot be selected or changed. Make edits in the .odt and convert again, or save it with ODT to PDF when the text must stay selectable.

Is there a page limit for an ODT?

Yes, a 100-page limit for each document. The count is known only after the file has been laid out, so our 101-page test was turned away at that point, with a message giving the number of pages. Our 100-page test came back as one ZIP of 100 PNGs, about 13 MB at 150 DPI.

What about OpenDocument spreadsheets and presentations?

This page takes .odt text documents only, and the site has no converter for .ods or .odp files. LibreOffice can export either as a PDF with File > Export As > Export as PDF, and PDF to PNG then makes a picture of each page.

Is converting ODT to PNG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your ODT and the PNG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PNG look exactly like the ODT?

This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
