What the PNG of your HTML looks like

To convert HTML to PNG, press Select HTML file (or drop an .html or .htm file on the tool above), pick a Resolution and press Convert to PNG. Your file is laid out on A4 pages, much as if it were printed, and each page becomes a PNG image. A short file gives you one picture; a longer one gives you a ZIP of numbered pages, named after your file.

This HTML to PNG converter lays the page out the way a word processor would, not the way a browser draws it. That suits letters, reports, receipts and email templates built with tables. It suits a modern site design less well: there is no browser width to set, and boxes placed side by side with flexbox or CSS grid come out stacked. The route is graded Picture-perfect: the image looks right down to the pixel, but the words become part of the picture and can no longer be selected.

One upright A4 page at each resolution (our test page had a heading, text, a table and a photo)
ResolutionPixelsPNG sizeGood for
96 DPI794 × 112365 KBScreens and quick previews
150 DPI (default)1241 × 1754120 KBDocuments, slides and sharing
300 DPI2481 × 3508238 KBPrinting and zooming in

Each PNG is the whole page, margins included. It has no transparency: where your HTML sets no background the page is white, and a background colour set on the body fills the whole picture, edge to edge.

How to convert HTML to PNG

  1. 1
Select or drop your HTML file

    Choose your options

We show the route and its fidelity grade up front.

  3. 3
    Download your PNG

Then it is deleted after 24 hours, automatically.

What you are starting with

A document as markup. Opens in a browser, edits in anything.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels on a solid page, so text and lines stay crisp. No see-through background.

Worth knowing

Each page is laid out as a word processor would print it, then drawn as a picture: side-by-side boxes stack, hidden parts show, web fonts become a standard font and scripts do not run. The text can no longer be selected.

Good to know about converting HTML to PNG

  • Every page becomes its own PNG. Content that fits on one A4 page gives one picture; more gives a ZIP named after your file, in order: article.html gives article-p001.png, article-p002.png and so on.
  • It converts an .html file you upload, not a live web address. Images embedded in the file are kept. Images it links to, on another web address or as a separate file, are left out.
  • JavaScript does not run, and modern layout such as flexbox is not applied, so boxes meant to sit side by side come out stacked.
  • At the default 150 DPI each page is 1241 × 1754 pixels; choose 300 DPI for print.

What comes through from your HTML file

Only the .html file is uploaded, and no browser opens it. This is what our test files showed:

  • Styles written in a style block inside the file apply: colours, fonts, borders and backgrounds.
  • Tables keep their cells side by side, so a table is the safe way to build columns.
  • Flexbox and CSS grid are not applied, and their boxes come out one under the other.
  • JavaScript does not run, so anything a script would add or change is missing.
  • Links are drawn as underlined text, but nothing in a PNG can be clicked.
  • Pictures written into the file as data URIs are kept. A picture or stylesheet saved beside the file on your computer is missing, because it is not uploaded.
Tip: A picture linked from another web address is left out as well, and leaves a blank space. Write the pictures you need into the file as data URIs.

Changing the size and shape of the picture

The tool has no width or page size setting: every page is A4 and upright unless the HTML itself says otherwise. If you can edit the file, a CSS @page rule changes the page, and so the picture:

  • size: landscape turns the page on its side: 1754 × 1241 pixels at 150 DPI.
  • A size in millimetres sets any shape. size: 200mm 100mm gave a 1182 × 591 picture at 150 DPI: about millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI.
  • page-break-before: always in a heading's style attribute starts a new page there, and so a new PNG. In our tests the same rule on a div, set through a class, was ignored.
  • Give the margin a unit: margin: 0mm removes it, but margin: 0 with no unit was ignored and the 2 cm margin stayed.

PNG, JPG or PDF for your HTML

All three start from the same A4 pages. We converted a page full of text and a page with a photo to each:

The same HTML at 150 DPI, JPG at Balanced quality

A page with a photo120 KB80 KB38 KB

Pick PNG for pages of text, tables and diagrams: it is lossless, and our full page of text came out about the same size as a JPG. Pick HTML to JPG, linked below, when photos fill most of the page. When the words must stay words, convert HTML to PDF instead. For a smaller picture of a page that is only text and flat colour, convert HTML to GIF: our receipt page came out at 49 KB as a GIF against 116 KB as a PNG, and looked the same.

Only have a web address? Open the page in your browser, use Print and choose Save as PDF, which keeps its layout and images, then convert PDF to PNG at 96, 150 or 300 DPI.

Other documents become PNG pages here too: convert Word to PNG for a .docx, convert ODT to PNG for an .odt, convert PowerPoint to PNG for a deck, and convert text to PNG for a plain .txt file. Going the other way, convert PNG to HTML reads the words off a picture into a plain web page, without the picture itself.

Questions people ask

Can I make a transparent PNG from HTML?

No. The PNG is saved with no transparency. Where your HTML sets no background the page is white, and see-through parts of an embedded picture turn white too. A background colour set on the body fills the whole page, margins included.

Can I choose the image size or resolution?

The resolution, yes: 96, 150 or 300 DPI, with 150 as the default. The page itself is A4 and upright, with no width setting. If you can edit the HTML, the CSS rule @page { size: landscape; } turns it on its side, and a size in millimetres, such as size: 200mm 100mm, sets any shape you need.

Does JavaScript run before the image is made?

No. The file is read as it is, so text or pictures a script would add are missing, and anything a script would change stays as written. Put the content you need into the HTML itself.

Can I get one tall PNG of the whole page?

No. The HTML is cut into A4 pages and each one becomes its own PNG, so a long file comes back as a ZIP with the pages numbered in order: article.html gives article-p001.png, article-p002.png and so on. The page limit is 100: a longer file is stopped with a message that gives its page count.

Can I turn a web address into a PNG?

No. This page converts an .html file you upload. It does not open web addresses. Images it links to, on another web address or as a separate file, are left out.

Is converting HTML to PNG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your HTML and the PNG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PNG look exactly like the HTML?

This pair grades as “Good enough”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
