Why turn a PDF into WebP

To convert PDF to WebP, select or drop your PDF on this page, choose a Resolution and an Image quality, and press Convert to WEBP. Every page becomes a WebP image of its own. A one-page PDF gives you one WebP, and a longer one gives you a ZIP named after the PDF: report.pdf comes back as report.zip, holding report-p001.webp, report-p002.webp and so on.

WebP was made for websites. It usually holds a picture in fewer bytes than JPG or PNG, so a web page that shows it has less to download. That makes this PDF to WebP converter a good fit when a brochure, a menu or a price list has to appear on a site as pictures. In our tests one A4 page filled with a photo came out at 82 KB as a WebP, 171 KB as a JPG and 1.4 MB as a PNG.

The catch is that some older software does not open WebP. If the pictures are for an app or a form rather than a website, convert PDF to JPG or convert PDF to PNG instead. Other files become WebP pictures here too: convert PowerPoint to WebP for slides, and convert HTML to WebP for a saved web page.

We show the route and its fidelity grade up front.

  3. 3
    Download your WebP

Then it is deleted after 24 hours, automatically.

What you are starting with

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

What you are getting

The web’s efficient format. Smaller than JPEG, refused by older software.

Worth knowing

WebP compresses the picture, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

Quality and resolution settings

Two choices in the sidebar decide how heavy each WebP gets. Resolution gives a page more or fewer pixels: an A4 page is about 794 pixels wide at 96 DPI, 1240 at 150 DPI (the default) and 2480 at 300 DPI. Image quality, set to Smaller, Balanced (the default) or Best, decides how much fine detail the compression may drop. Here is one A4 photo page and one page of small print at six of the settings:

Two A4 pages as WebP files, size by setting
SettingFull-page photo30 lines of small print
96 DPI, Smaller32 KB71 KB
96 DPI, Balanced48 KB83 KB
150 DPI, Balanced (default)82 KB144 KB
150 DPI, Best221 KB200 KB
300 DPI, Balanced190 KB313 KB
300 DPI, Best495 KB451 KB

Two things stand out. A page of small print can weigh more than a photo, because every letter has sharp edges for the compression to keep. And Best costs a photo far more than it costs text: from Balanced to Best, the photo page grew 2.7 times and the text page 1.4 times. Smaller still kept all 30 lines of our small print easy to read at 150 DPI.

Tip: Even Best is lossy. Each WebP made here drops a little fine detail that you will rarely notice at normal size, which is why the route is graded Very good. When every pixel of a page has to survive, choose PNG.

How WebP compares with JPG and PNG

We converted the same PDF pages to all three formats at 150 DPI with the Balanced setting. WebP was the smallest every time, at between a third and just over half the size of the JPG:

The same A4 pages at 150 DPI, Balanced
PageWebPJPGPNG
A photo, edge to edge82 KB171 KB1.4 MB
A short letter22 KB62 KB47 KB
Text with coloured shapes and lines69 KB145 KB145 KB
30 lines of small print144 KB255 KB311 KB

Smaller did not mean blurrier text. Next to a PNG of the same page, the small print in the WebP looked the same, and no pixel was more than 23 shades out of 255 away. The WebP files have no transparent areas: every page is drawn on white.

What happens to a PDF with many pages

Every page is converted, up to 100 in one PDF, and the whole PDF counts as one conversion. Each page becomes its own WebP in the ZIP, numbered in page order, and keeps the shape of its page: in a test PDF that mixed both, the portrait page came back 1240 × 1755 pixels and the landscape page 1755 × 1240. A longer PDF is refused as soon as you send it, with a message giving its page count, so you know how far to split it.

Going the other way, convert WebP to PDF to put a picture back on a page. Keep your original PDF all the same: in a WebP every word is part of the picture.

Questions people ask

Will each page of my PDF become its own WebP?

Yes. A one-page PDF gives a single WebP, and a longer one gives a ZIP with one WebP per page, named after your file and numbered in order. A 100-page PDF gave us 100 WebP files; a PDF with more pages is refused before it converts.

Which quality setting should I pick?

Balanced, the default, suits most pages. Pick Smaller when every kilobyte counts: our page of small print stayed easy to read with it. Pick Best for photos that must look their sharpest, and expect a bigger file: our photo page grew from 82 KB to 221 KB at 150 DPI.

What can I do when a program refuses the WebP?

Some older software does not read WebP at all. For those programs, convert the PDF to JPG or PNG instead. If you already have a WebP, the PNG converter turns it into a PNG or a JPG in your browser.

Can I search or copy the text in a WebP image?

No. Each page is drawn as a picture, so its words are pixels: they cannot be selected, searched or copied. To get the words out, convert the PDF to Text or to Word instead.

Does a WebP made from a PDF have a transparent background?

No. Every page is drawn on white, and the WebP files come back with no transparent areas at any setting. For a see-through background, open the WebP in the Remove white background tool afterwards: it can save the result as a WebP again.

Is converting PDF to WebP free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your PDF and the WebP we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the WebP look exactly like the PDF?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
