What the PNG shows

To convert text to PNG, press Select TXT file or drop a .txt file on the tool above, keep 150 DPI or pick another Resolution, and press Convert to PNG. Every page of the file comes back as a lossless PNG image. This text to PNG converter works from a saved file, not from words typed into a box: to put a short line of your own words on a picture, use Add text to image instead.

Behind the button there are two steps, graded Picture-perfect: the text is set on A4 pages as if for printing, then each page is drawn as a PNG. A line holds 80 characters. A longer line wraps at the last space that fits, and a run with no spaces, such as a long web address, is split at the 80th character. Blank lines stay, so your paragraphs keep their gaps.

Each PNG is the whole page, margins included: dark letters on plain white, with no transparency. PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no blur from compression, so the edges of the letters stay crisp when you zoom in. They are pixels now, though, and nobody can select, search or copy them. When the words must stay words, convert text to PDF instead.

What you are starting with

Just the words. No fonts, no layout, no arguments.

What you are getting

Lossless pixels on a solid page, so text and lines stay crisp. No see-through background.

Worth knowing

The result looks right down to the pixel, but text stops being text and drawings stop being vectors.

Good to know about converting TXT to PNG

  • Every page becomes its own PNG. A file that fits on one page gives one picture; a longer one gives a ZIP named after your file, with the pages in order: notes.txt gives notes-p001.png, notes-p002.png and so on.
  • The text is laid out on A4 pages first, in a fixed-width font (Liberation Mono), so columns lined up with spaces stay lined up. Long lines wrap instead of being cut off.
  • At the default 150 DPI each page is 1241 × 1754 pixels. Choose 300 DPI (2481 × 3508) for print, or 96 DPI (794 × 1123) for screens.
  • Up to 100 pages at a time.

Size and long files

Resolution sets how many pixels each A4 page gets, and how full the page is decides most of the file size. These are our test pages:

One A4 page as a PNG at each resolution
ResolutionPixelsA short note (17 lines)A page filled with text
96 DPI794 × 1123about 40 KBabout 260 KB
150 DPI (default)1241 × 1754about 65 KBabout 490 KB
300 DPI2481 × 3508about 160 KBabout 950 KB

A longer file is cut wherever a page fills up, and every page becomes its own PNG, all in one ZIP. The 100-page limit is counted after the layout step, so a file that runs over is stopped there, with a message giving the count it came to. Our test file of 7,000 short lines came to 110 and was stopped, while a file of a few thousand short lines fits.

Is a JPG smaller? Barely, for text. The same full page at 150 DPI came to about 410 KB as a JPG at Balanced quality, against about 490 KB as a PNG, and zoomed in, the JPG had faint grey specks around every letter where the PNG had clean white. Our guide to JPEG vs PNG explains where each format wins.

Spacing, tabs and other alphabets

A text file holds no fonts or styles, so the PNG can only show what the layout step makes of the characters. In our tests:

  • Columns separated by tabs drifted out of line, because the page sets its tab stops differently from most text editors. Where columns matter, separate them with spaces, not tabs.
  • Accents and symbols such as é, ü, ñ, € and £ came through from a UTF-8 file.
  • Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic letters were drawn as written.
  • Chinese and Japanese came out as empty boxes, and so do Korean and Hindi, because our server has no font for them.

If you wanted text on a picture

Many people who search for text to PNG want a few typed words as an image, often on a see-through background. This converter cannot make that: it needs a file, it draws a whole A4 page on white, and it offers no choice of font or colour. Add text to image, linked at the top of this page, writes a caption, title or label on a picture you already have, in Inter Bold or Anton at the size and colour you pick, and can save the result as a PNG.

Text that already sits in a formatted file is better turned into a picture from that file: convert Word to PNG for a document with headings, bold and pictures, convert PowerPoint to PNG for one image per slide, and convert HTML to PNG for a saved web page.

Questions people ask

Can I type text and get a PNG?

Not on this page: it converts a saved .txt file, not words typed into a box. Type your words into any plain-text editor, save the file with a .txt ending and drop it here, and you get a PNG of a whole A4 page. For a few words on a picture of your own, use Add text to image.

Can my text come out on a transparent background?

No. Every PNG from this page is saved without an alpha channel (the part of a PNG that holds transparency), and the page around your text is plain white, margins included. None of our test pictures had a single see-through pixel.

What size will the PNG be?

At the default 150 DPI each page is 1241 × 1754 pixels. Choose 96 DPI for 794 × 1123 or 300 DPI for 2481 × 3508. The page is always A4 and upright, so a three-line note gives a picture of the same size as a full page, mostly white.

Why do some letters show as empty boxes?

Our server has no font for Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Hindi, so those letters are drawn as empty boxes, even from a file saved as UTF-8. Accented Latin letters, Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic come through.

My text file runs to several pages. Do I get all of them?

Yes. Every page becomes a PNG, and a file of more than one page comes back as a ZIP of them, named after your file and numbered in order. Up to 100 pages.

Is converting Text to PNG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your Text and the PNG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the PNG look exactly like the Text?

This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
