How the PDF is rebuilt as ODT

To convert PDF to ODT, drop the PDF anywhere on this page or press Select PDF file, then press Convert to ODT. You download an OpenDocument text file with the same name (budget.pdf becomes budget.odt), ready to open in LibreOffice Writer or any other program that reads .odt files.

A PDF fixes every line in place and has no paragraphs to type into, so this PDF to ODT converter works the document out again in two steps. First our server rebuilds the pages as an editable Word file, deciding which words make a paragraph, which make a table and where each picture belongs. That file is then saved as OpenDocument. Because the layout is rebuilt, not copied, the route is graded Very good: a margin, font or line break can shift.

What you are starting with

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.

What you are getting

The open standard. Governments and open-source office suites love it.

Worth knowing

A PDF is a frozen page, so the file is rebuilt, not copied. Expect the odd margin, font or line break to move.

Tables, columns and scanned pages

We converted test PDFs here and unzipped every ODT to see what arrived. From a PDF with real text:

  • Tables came back as ODT tables to edit cell by cell: one of four rows and three columns kept all twelve cells.
  • Bold, italic and letters such as é, Ø and £ stayed as they were.
  • Photos were stored inside the .odt with every pixel, at the size they had on the page.
  • Each PDF page started a new page, and paper sizes held: US Letter stayed US Letter, landscape A4 stayed landscape.

Plan some tidying in Writer. Headings arrive as large bold text with no heading style, so a contents list will not find them. Bullets and numbers are typed characters, not a real list. A running header or footer becomes ordinary lines on every page. Links were lost in our tests, together with the words they sat on. Columns fared worst: in a one-page newsletter, the left column's text was spread over two columns on its own, and the right column's text moved to a second page at full width.

Scanned pages are photographs of paper, with no text in them. When nothing in the PDF is text, the first step reads the English words from the page, and the ODT holds plain paragraphs, one for each printed line. In our scan the only slips were Ø read as @ and one bracket that was never on the paper.

ODT or Word?

Send what was asked for. ODT is the right file when a council, a university or a colleague on LibreOffice wants an .odt; our guide to what an ODT file is for explains why some offices insist on it. For a reader on Microsoft Word, convert PDF to Word: one step, with no second save on top.

Still have the Word file the PDF was made from? Convert Word to ODT and nothing has to be rebuilt: it is one step, graded Exact. Once your edits are done, convert ODT to PDF to send a fixed copy again. If the words are headed for a website rather than a word processor, convert PDF to HTML.

Questions people ask

Can I edit the ODT after converting from PDF?

Yes. The PDF is rebuilt as an editable document before it is saved as ODT, so the words, tables and pictures are all yours to change in LibreOffice Writer or another program that opens .odt files. Apply heading styles yourself if you need a contents list, as headings arrive as bold text.

Will tables in my PDF come through?

Yes, when the PDF has real text: each table in our tests arrived as an ODT table with every cell in place, ready to resize or add rows to. From a scanned PDF, a table comes back as lines of words without its grid.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes, when every page is a scan. The English words are read from the page and arrive as plain paragraphs, one per line of the scan, so check names and figures, as a scanned page can be misread. In a PDF that mixes typed and scanned pages, the scanned pages arrive as pictures you cannot edit.

Should I convert my PDF to ODT or to Word?

Convert to the format the reader asked for. ODT suits LibreOffice and offices that work in OpenDocument; Word suits Microsoft Word, and PDF to Word takes one step fewer. If nobody named a format, ask which program they edit in.

Why is the ODT bigger than my PDF?

Usually photos. Our test PDF held its two photos as compressed JPEGs, and the ODT stored each one as a PNG, which keeps every pixel but takes more room: the 238 KB PDF became a 2.0 MB ODT. A 50 KB report with no pictures gave an 18 KB ODT.

Is converting PDF to ODT free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your PDF and the ODT we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the ODT look exactly like the PDF?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
