A moving GIF of your pages, or one still page
To convert PDF to GIF, select or drop your PDF on this page, keep Animated GIF of all pages, choose a Time per page and press Convert to GIF. Every page becomes one frame of a single GIF, in page order, and the GIF plays on a loop by itself. A one-page PDF gives a still GIF.
The work happens in two places. Our server draws each page as a picture, then your browser joins the pictures into the GIF while the screen says Making the GIF on this device, so keep the tab open until it is done. The GIF is named after your PDF: report.pdf comes back as report.gif.
We tested this PDF to GIF converter on a three-page A4 report: text and drawings on page one, a photo on page two and 30 lines of text on page three. On the preset settings it came back as a 139 KB GIF of three frames, each 794 × 1123 pixels, shown for 2 seconds apiece and playing on a loop.
Want a single picture instead? Choose Page 1 only for a still GIF of the first page, at 96, 150 or 300 DPI. For every page as a separate picture in full colour, convert PDF to PNG: you get a ZIP with one PNG per page.

A page, frozen. Looks identical everywhere, resists editing everywhere.
256 colours and a loop. Old, limited, immortal.
GIF keeps only 256 colours, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.
Good to know about converting PDF to GIF
- Animated GIF of all pages makes every page one frame, in order, each shown for the time you pick (half a second to 5 seconds), and the GIF loops forever.
- Page 1 only gives a still GIF of the first page.
- Our server draws the pages at 96 or 150 DPI (96 by default, which makes an A4 page 794 pixels wide), and your browser puts them together into the GIF.
- A GIF frame holds up to 256 colours, so photos and gradients show some banding; text and flat colours come out clean.
- Up to 100 pages. A one-page PDF gives a still GIF, and a page wider than 2,048 pixels is scaled down to fit.
How long each page stays on screen
Time per page offers half a second, 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds, and starts on 2. Every page gets the same time, and after the last page the GIF starts again from the first. One pass lasts the number of pages times that time: our three pages at 2 seconds made a 6-second loop, and a 20-page PDF at 3 seconds takes a minute.
- Half a second or 1 second: a quick flick through a document, such as a brochure or a menu shown as a preview.
- 2 or 3 seconds: pages with a heading, a chart or a picture that people take in at a glance.
- 5 seconds: pages with sentences to read. Small print stays hard to read in a GIF 794 pixels wide, so choose 150 DPI for text-heavy pages.
Frame size, file size and colours
Resolution, in dots per inch (DPI), sets how many pixels each page gets. The animation offers 96 DPI, the preset, or 150 DPI; 300 DPI comes only with the Page 1 only choice. These are the results from our three-page test PDF:
| Setting | Each frame | GIF size |
|---|---|---|
| Animated, 96 DPI (preset) | 794 × 1123 pixels | 139 KB for all three pages |
| Animated, 150 DPI | 1240 × 1755 pixels | 256 KB for all three pages |
| Page 1 only, 96 DPI | 794 × 1123 pixels | 44 KB |
| Page 1 only, 300 DPI | 2480 × 3509 pixels | 183 KB |
Each frame gets its own set of up to 256 colours, the most a GIF frame can hold. Our two text pages lost nothing you can see: next to PNG pictures of the same pages, no pixel was more than 12 shades out of 255 away. The photo page had 60,493 different colours as a PNG and 256 in the GIF, and its smooth background broke into visible bands.
When your PDF mixes page sizes
The first page decides the shape of the whole GIF. Every later page is shrunk to fit inside that shape, whole and centred, with white filling the rest. In our test, a portrait A4 page followed by a landscape one gave two portrait frames: the landscape page was scaled down to the width of the frame, with white bands above and below it.
The same rule works the other way round. If a PDF opens with a landscape cover and carries on in portrait, every portrait page sits small in the middle of a wide frame, with white on both sides. When the pages differ, a GIF of each part, or PNG pictures of the pages, may serve you better.
Other GIFs, and turning a GIF back into a PDF
- Slides: convert PowerPoint to GIF works the same way, with a Time per slide, for .pptx and .ppt decks.
- Plain text and web pages: convert text to GIF and convert HTML to GIF give still GIFs, one for each A4 page, in a ZIP when there are several. They do not animate.
- A GIF that plays once, moves faster than half a second a page, or is narrower: convert the PDF to PNG, then add the pages to Images to GIF. It runs in your browser, takes up to 100 pictures, and offers a Time per frame from 0.1 to 3 seconds, Forever, Once or 3 times, and a Width of 320 to 800 pixels.
Going the other way, convert GIF to PDF puts only the first frame on a page: our three-frame GIF came back as a one-page A4 PDF. So keep your original PDF. In the GIF every word is part of a picture, which means it cannot be selected, searched or copied. To put the words on a web page as text you can select and edit, convert PDF to HTML.
Questions people ask
Can I turn a PDF into an animated GIF?
Yes, and it is what this page makes unless you choose otherwise. Animated GIF of all pages is selected from the start: each page becomes one frame, in order, and the GIF loops forever. Only a one-page PDF gives a still GIF, because there is nothing to move between.
How do I convert a PDF to GIF?
Select or drop your PDF, keep Animated GIF of all pages or pick Page 1 only, set the Time per page and the Resolution, and press Convert to GIF. Keep the tab open while your browser makes the GIF, then download it. With no account you can convert three files a day, each up to 25 MB.
Why do photos from my PDF look grainy in the GIF?
A GIF frame holds at most 256 colours. That is plenty for text and line drawings, but a photo or a gradient has thousands of shades, so they merge into bands. The photo page of our test PDF went from 60,493 colours to 256. For a page that must keep full colour, convert the PDF to PNG or JPG instead.
How many pages can I convert to GIF?
Up to 100 in one PDF, and each page becomes a frame. A longer one is refused before anything converts, with a message that gives its page count and the limit of 100. Split it into shorter PDFs and make a GIF of each.
Can I choose how long each page shows in the GIF?
Yes. Under Time per page, pick half a second, 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds. Every page is shown for the same time, and the GIF loops forever.
Can I get one page as a still picture instead?
Pick Page 1 only for a still GIF of the first page. For any other page, or every page as a picture of its own, use PDF to PNG, which gives a ZIP of the pages.
Is converting PDF to GIF free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your PDF and the GIF we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the GIF look exactly like the PDF?
This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here: our servers draw its pages, your browser joins them into the animated GIF, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
