What the JPG looks like

To convert text to JPG online, press Select TXT file or drop a .txt file on the tool above, choose an Image quality and a Resolution, and press Convert to JPEG. Each A4 page of the file comes back as a JPEG picture. This text to JPG converter starts from a saved file and has no box to type into: to write a few words on a photo or a picture of your own, use Add text to image, which works in your browser and can save the result as a JPG.

Behind the button, our server sets your text on A4 pages as if for printing, then saves each page as a JPEG, a route graded Very good. The words are black on plain white, margins included, in Liberation Mono, a typewriter-style font where an i is as wide as an m. That is why the prices on our test menu, spaced out with dots, still lined up in the JPG, and why its é, ñ, £ and € came through from a UTF-8 file.

A row takes up to 80 characters, and a longer line is broken at a space and carried on below. Once the page is a JPG, the words are only pixels: no one can search, select or edit them. If they must stay words, convert text to PDF instead.

How to convert TXT to JPEG

What you are starting with

Just the words. No fonts, no layout, no arguments.

What you are getting

Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.

Worth knowing

JPEG compresses the picture and has no transparency, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

Good to know about converting TXT to JPEG

  • Every page becomes its own JPG. A file that fits on one page gives one picture; a longer one gives a ZIP named after your file, in order: notes.txt gives notes-p001.jpg, notes-p002.jpg and so on.
  • The text is set in a fixed-width font (Liberation Mono) on A4 pages, and long lines wrap onto the next line.
  • Image quality is Smaller, Balanced or Best. For pages of plain text, PNG keeps the edges of the letters sharper.
  • At the default 150 DPI each page is 1241 × 1754 pixels. Up to 100 pages at a time.

Choosing Smaller, Balanced or Best

Image quality decides how hard each page is squeezed, and the tool puts it plainly: bigger files look better; smaller files send faster. We ran text to JPEG on three of our own files at the default 150 DPI with each setting, and saved the same pages as PNG to compare:

One A4 page at 150 DPI
Our test pageSmallerBalanced (default)BestPNG
A 12-line café menu59 KB69 KB93 KB50 KB
64 rows of wrapped lines256 KB341 KB566 KB329 KB
64 rows packed with words429 KB580 KB980 KB431 KB

At normal size all three settings read cleanly. Zoomed in, Smaller leaves grey specks around every letter and Balanced fainter ones, while Best is hard to tell from the PNG: no pixel was more than 10 shades out of 255 away from it.

Resolution sets the pixels, and the page is always an upright A4: 794 × 1123 at 96 DPI, 1241 × 1754 at 150 DPI and 2481 × 3508 at 300 DPI. Our page of wrapped lines came to 197 KB, 341 KB and 845 KB at Balanced, so 300 DPI is worth it only for printing.

When the text runs past one page

TXT to JPG works page by page: a page holds 64 rows, and each one becomes a JPG of its own. Our test file had 160 lines of 88 characters, so every line took two rows, 320 in all. It came back as report.zip, holding report-p001.jpg to report-p005.jpg.

Before you download, the done screen counts the pictures for you, and a row of small previews shows each page. The whole file is one conversion, so a long report uses one of the free plan's three conversions a day, not one per page.

Sharper text, or text on a photo

JPG was made for photographs, where its compression hides well. A page of text is the opposite: hard black edges on flat white, which is where the specks show. In the table above the PNG was smaller than the Balanced JPG on every page, and only Smaller ever beat it. So unless a form or a site asks for JPG, convert text to PNG for crisper letters. Our guide to JPEG vs PNG explains where each format wins.

If the words belong on a picture, such as a caption on a photo or a title on a banner, Add text to image, linked at the top of this page, is the tool for it. It writes up to 200 characters on a picture you choose, with Anton or Inter Bold as the font, and nothing is uploaded.

And if your text started life in a formatted file, convert that file rather than a copy pasted into a .txt, so headings and bold type come through: convert Word to JPG for a .docx or .doc, or convert HTML to JPG for a saved web page.

Questions people ask

Can I type text and turn it into a JPG?

Not on this page. It converts a saved file ending in .txt, not words typed into a box. Write the words in a text editor, save them as a .txt file and convert that. For a short line of words on a picture, use Add text to image instead.

Which image quality should I choose?

Balanced, the default, suits screens, chats and email. Choose Smaller when a site limits the size of an upload: it cut our full pages by about a quarter, at the cost of specks you only see zoomed in. Choose Best for printing; it came out up to 70% larger than Balanced in our tests.

Will every page of a long text file become a JPG?

Yes. Each A4 page becomes its own JPG, and a file of more than one page comes back as one ZIP, named after your file, with the pages numbered in order. The page limit is 100.

Is PNG better than JPG for text?

For plain text, usually. On the three pages we tested for this page, the PNG was smaller than the JPG at Balanced quality, and its letters had clean edges where the JPG had faint specks. JPG is the better pick only when the place you are sending the picture to accepts nothing else.

How do I get just one page of my text file as a JPG?

Every page is converted. For a longer file they come in a ZIP, numbered in order, so take the page you need from it.

Is converting Text to JPG free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your Text and the JPG we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the JPG look exactly like the Text?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
