HTML → DOCX

From web markup to an editable document

To convert HTML to Word, drop your .html or .htm file on the tool above, keep DOCX as the Word version and press Convert to DOCX. You get a document you can edit, named after your file: newsletter.html comes back as newsletter.docx.

This HTML to Word converter runs on our server, and the route is graded Good enough. The words and their structure arrive as they are; what a browser adds on top, such as CSS layout and scripts, does not, as the checks further down explain. From our test page:

  • Headings h1 to h3 became Word's own Heading 1 to 3 styles, so they show in the Navigation pane and can build a table of contents.
  • Bulleted, numbered and nested lists stayed Word lists. A table stayed a Word table, with its header row and merged cells.
  • Bold, italic, underline, text colours and font sizes were kept, and so were accented letters, the £ and € signs and an emoji.
  • The title on the browser tab became the document's Title, which Word lists under the file's properties.
Tip: Paragraphs that share a CSS class get a Word style of their own, named after the class: a paragraph with the class big became the style Body Text.big. Change that style once in Word and every paragraph using it follows.

What you are starting with

A document as markup. Opens in a browser, edits in anything.

What you are getting

Modern Word. The default way the working world writes things down.

Worth knowing

Headings, lists, tables, colours and links come through. Side-by-side boxes stack, hidden text shows, scripts do not run, and pictures are not stored inside the file.

What to check after converting

A Word document keeps its pages, styles and pictures inside one file. A web page leans on the browser for all three, so open the converted document and look at these parts first.

Pictures

A picture written into the HTML itself, as a data URI, is stored in the Word file at the size the page gave it: 240 by 120 pixels became 2.5 by 1.25 inches. A picture the page pulls from another web address is left out. Pictures saved in a folder next to the .html never reach us, since only the .html is uploaded. Add any you need with Insert, then Pictures, in Word.

Layout, hidden text and scripts

  • Boxes placed side by side with flexbox or CSS grid end up one under the other. Table cells keep their columns, so a layout built from tables, as many email templates are, holds its shape.
  • Text hidden with display: none appears as ordinary text, and menus, cookie notices and form labels come through too. Delete them from the HTML before converting, or from the document afterwards.
  • JavaScript does not run, so words a script would write into the page are missing.

Page size, margins and fonts

The document is laid out on upright A4 pages, 2 cm from the left edge and 1 cm from the others. Word's Layout tab changes both. Editing the HTML first works as well: an @page rule asking for 8.5in by 11in produced US Letter pages, and page-break-before: always began a fresh page in Word.

Fonts are named in the document, not packed into it. Word shows a font only when your computer has it installed, so a web font the page downloaded from elsewhere is replaced by one you have.

Which Word version to choose

Choose DOCX unless something insists on .doc. Word has saved .docx by default since Word 2007. DOC is the older Word 97 to 2003 format: pick DOC (Word 97) under Word version only for software from before 2007, or a system that accepts nothing else. The button then reads Convert to DOC.

Both versions carry the same content. Our test page gave a .doc with the same headings, lists, table, links, embedded picture and title as the .docx.

Questions people ask

How do I convert HTML to Word?

Press Select HTML file, or drop your .html or .htm file on this page. Keep DOCX under Word version, or pick DOC for software from before 2007, then press Convert to DOCX and download the document. The free plan takes one file at a time, up to 25 MB, three conversions a day, with no account.

Can I get a .doc file instead of .docx?

Yes. Pick DOC (Word 97) under Word version before you convert, and the same page makes a Word 97 .doc. In our test it held the same headings, lists, table, links and pictures as the .docx.

Will images in my HTML appear in the Word file?

Pictures embedded in the HTML as data URIs are stored in the Word file. A picture loaded from another web address is left out, and one saved in a folder beside the .html is not uploaded at all. Insert those in Word once the document is open.

Can I convert a web page by its address?

No. There is no box for a web address: the page converts an .html or .htm file you upload. Save the page from your browser as an .html file first, then drop it here. Its pictures sit in a separate folder, so add them in Word afterwards.

Will the links still work in Word?

Yes. Links to websites and email links stay clickable in the document, and a link to a heading lower down the same page becomes a jump to that heading inside the document.

Why does hidden text show up in my Word document?

Word does not apply the CSS that hid it. Text hidden with display: none comes through as normal text, so remove it from the HTML before converting, or delete it in Word.

Is converting HTML to Word free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your HTML and the Word we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the Word look exactly like the HTML?

This pair grades as “Good enough”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
