Why PNG is a safe swap for TIFF
To convert TIFF to PNG, select or drop the file on this page, press Convert to PNG and save the result. The TIFF is read and converted on your device, so nothing is uploaded, and .tif and .tiff files both work: they are one format with two spellings.
A PNG is simply easier to use. Most web browsers will not show a TIFF, while a PNG shows in any current browser and goes into documents, slides and upload forms. What is a TIFF file explains where TIFFs come from and why they are so large.
PNG is lossless, like most TIFFs, so the swap costs nothing in quality. The route is one step, graded Picture-perfect, and in our tests every pixel of each ordinary 8-bit TIFF came through identical, from a scanned page to a screenshot. See-through areas stay see-through, and a colour profile in the TIFF is kept.
Camera details such as the date (EXIF) are not copied. The resolution note is: a scan saved at 300 DPI gives a PNG that says 300 DPI too, so it prints at the size of the paper it came from.

Nothing was uploaded, so there is nothing to delete.
Print and archive pixels, usually large, trusted by scanners.
Lossless pixels with transparency. Screenshots, logos, anything with an edge.
An ordinary 8-bit TIFF keeps every pixel. A 16-bit TIFF is saved as 8-bit, and partly see-through pixels can shift slightly in colour.
File size, pages and unusual TIFFs
Whether the PNG is smaller than the TIFF depends on how the TIFF was stored. We measured four test files on this page:
| Our test file | As a TIFF | As a PNG |
|---|---|---|
| A typed A4 page at 300 DPI | 24.9 MB uncompressed, 801 KB with LZW | 982 KB to 1.0 MB |
| A colour A4 scan with paper grain | 24.9 MB uncompressed, 8.3 MB with LZW | 8.6 MB to 10.9 MB |
| A 1920 × 1080 screenshot | 5.9 MB uncompressed, 377 KB with LZW | 134 KB to 137 KB |
| A black-and-white fax page | 72 KB with fax (CCITT Group 4) compression | 107 KB |
An uncompressed TIFF shrinks a great deal. One already packed with lossless LZW compression comes out about the same size or larger, and a black-and-white page grows a little, though it is saved in black and white too, because fax compression packs text better than PNG does. Each browser writes PNG files its own way, so sizes differ a little while the pixels stay the same. If the result is too big, Compress PNG makes it smaller, losslessly or with fewer colours, and keeps the transparency.
A TIFF with several pages
Every page is converted, each into its own PNG, and they come together in a ZIP: our three-page scan-colour.tif came back as scan-colour.zip, holding scan-colour-p001.png to scan-colour-p003.png. The page counts the pages when you add the file, and says in advance if a very long one will not fit in your browser’s memory.
To keep a scan together as one document instead, choose TIFF to PDF from the related conversions below.
Deep colour, soft edges and unreadable TIFFs
- A TIFF with 16 bits per colour (often called 48-bit colour) becomes a PNG with 8 bits per colour: 256 shades of each colour instead of 65,536. It looks the same on screen, but keep the TIFF if you plan heavy colour editing.
- In a logo with soft, partly see-through edges, every pixel keeps its exact transparency. The colour of the faintest edge pixels can shift slightly, which you will not see at normal size.
TIFF to PNG, JPG or PDF
Choose by what you need next. For a scan you have to email or upload, convert TIFF to JPG: a much smaller file, with some fine detail lost. For a scan of several pages that should stay one document, TIFF to PDF is in the related conversions below.
| PNG | JPG | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixels | Kept exactly | Compressed, some detail lost | Kept, placed on a page |
| See-through areas | Kept | Filled with white | Filled with white |
| A TIFF of several pages | One PNG per page, in a ZIP | One JPG per page, in a ZIP | One PDF holding every page |
| Best for | Screenshots, logos and editing | Sending a photo or a scan | Sending or filing a document |
Still deciding between the first two? JPEG vs PNG explains when each is the right one to send. Going the other way, convert PNG to TIFF when a printer or an archive asks for TIFF. And if your logo is a drawing saved as SVG rather than a TIFF, convert SVG to PNG instead.
Questions people ask
How do I convert TIFF to PNG?
Select the TIFF, or drop it on this page; it stays on your device. Check the route, TIFF to PNG, and its grade, Picture-perfect, then press Convert to PNG and save the PNG. A TIFF with several pages comes back as a ZIP holding one PNG per page.
Will converting TIFF to PNG lose quality?
Not for an ordinary TIFF. PNG is lossless, and in our tests every pixel of 8-bit scans, a screenshot and a fax page came through identical. The one change is for a TIFF with 16 bits per colour: the PNG has 8, which looks the same on screen but leaves less room for heavy editing.
Can I convert a .tif file to PNG?
Yes. .tif and .tiff are two spellings of one format, and this TIFF to PNG converter takes both. To convert TIF to PNG, drop the file here as it is: letter.tif is saved as letter.png.
Why is my PNG bigger than the TIFF?
Usually because the TIFF was already compressed. A PNG is far smaller than an uncompressed TIFF, but next to one packed with LZW it often comes out about the same or larger, and a black-and-white fax page grew from 72 KB to 107 KB in our tests. Compress PNG can shrink the result, or TIFF to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Will see-through areas of my TIFF stay see-through?
Yes. Areas that are see-through in the TIFF stay see-through in the PNG, each pixel at the same level of transparency. A JPG or a PDF would fill them with white.
What if my TIFF has several pages?
Every page is converted: each page becomes its own PNG, and you get them together in a ZIP, numbered in order (scan-p001.png, scan-p002.png and so on). The one exception is a TIFF with more pages than your browser can hold at once: before you convert, the page says how many of them fit.
Is converting TIFF to PNG free?
Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
What happens to my files?
Nothing leaves your device. The TIFF is read and the PNG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.
Will the PNG look exactly like the TIFF?
This pair grades as “Picture-perfect”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.
How large can my file be?
As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
