How big the GIF comes out

To convert SVG to GIF, select or drop the SVG on this page and press Convert to GIF. This free SVG to GIF converter works online but inside your browser, so the drawing never leaves your device. There is nothing to set, not even the size: the GIF is drawn from the SVG's shapes at the size the file itself asks for.

  • A width and height on the svg tag win. Our 400 × 200 logo gave a 400 × 200 GIF, and a 24-pixel icon a 24 × 24 one. Millimetres, inches and other print units count at 96 pixels to the inch, so a 50 × 25 mm badge came out at 189 × 94.
  • With only a viewBox, or a width and height in percent, the viewBox numbers decide: 0 0 300 150 gave a 300 × 150 GIF.
  • With no size at all, the GIF is 1,024 pixels square.
  • The long side stops at 8,192 pixels. A drawing set to 10,000 × 5,000 was scaled down to 8,192 × 4,096, its shape kept.
Tip: Want a bigger GIF? Raise the width and height on the svg tag in a text editor, keeping their ratio, and convert again. With a viewBox in the tag, the drawing grows with them and stays sharp: our 24-pixel icon set to 240 filled a 240 × 240 GIF. Without one, the drawing stays small in the top-left corner of a larger, empty picture.

What you are starting with

Drawing instructions, not pixels. Scales to a billboard without blurring.

What you are getting

256 colours and a loop. Old, limited, immortal.

Worth knowing

GIF keeps only 256 colours, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

Animated SVGs become still

A GIF can hold an animation, but this page always makes a still one: a single picture, one frame. If your SVG moves, the GIF shows its very first moment, before anything has started to move.

We checked both ways an SVG can animate, animate tags (SMIL) and CSS keyframes, in Chrome and Firefox. A square set to slide right while turning from red to blue stayed red, exactly at its starting point. A circle set to fade in after one second was missing from the GIF altogether. Whatever your animation brings in later, the GIF leaves out.

This site cannot record an animated SVG frame by frame. If your design app can export each moment of the animation as a PNG, add those pictures to Images to GIF, set the Time per frame and press Make GIF. And if you already have the animation as a WebP, convert WebP to GIF instead: it keeps every frame and its timing.

GIF or PNG for an SVG

Most SVGs are logos, icons and diagrams, and a GIF carries their flat colours nearly unchanged. Nearly, not exactly: in our logo the yellow was exact, while the white lines turned a very pale blue, because the GIF gave them one palette colour with their blended edges. What a GIF cannot hold is the in-between. It has at most 256 colours, and each pixel is either fully clear or fully solid.

So pick GIF when the place you are posting to takes GIF but not SVG, or when a small file matters more than soft edges. Otherwise SVG to PNG, in the related conversions below, keeps every shade. Our guide to raster vs vector images explains why the SVG itself stays sharp at any size while a GIF or PNG made from it does not.

Other jobs suit other formats. For a form that asks for a JPG, convert SVG to JPG, which turns see-through areas white. For a web page, convert SVG to WebP, which keeps them. For print software that wants a TIFF, convert SVG to TIFF.

Questions people ask

How do I convert an SVG to GIF?

Select or drop your SVG on this page, or press Select SVG file. There are no settings, so press Convert to GIF, then Download to save it: logo.svg is saved as logo.gif. The conversion runs in your browser, and the file is never uploaded.

Will an animated SVG become an animated GIF?

No. The GIF is always one still frame showing the first moment of the animation, before anything moves, and shapes that only appear later are left out. That held in our tests for animate tags and CSS animations alike, in Chrome and Firefox.

How many pixels wide will my SVG's GIF be?

As wide as the SVG says: the width on its svg tag, else the width in its viewBox, else 1,024 pixels. The long side is capped at 8,192 pixels, with the shape kept. To change it, edit the width and height in the SVG before you convert.

Will a transparent SVG stay transparent as a GIF?

Yes, areas the SVG leaves empty stay clear. But a GIF pixel is either clear or solid, so soft edges turn hard, and faint parts go one way or the other depending on their colour: our black drop shadow vanished, while a red square at 30% opacity came out solid red.

Why does my GIF show stripes?

A smooth gradient needs more shades than the 256 a GIF can hold, so its blend breaks into flat bands. Our sunset gradient went from 1,443 colours as a PNG to 215 as a GIF, with bands across the sky. Flat logos and icons do not band; for gradients, convert the SVG to PNG.

Is converting SVG to GIF free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The SVG is read and the GIF is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the GIF look exactly like the SVG?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
