Transparency in a GIF is on or off

This PNG to GIF converter keeps the see-through background of a logo, sticker or icon, but only as on or off. Select or drop your PNG and press Convert to GIF. There is nothing to set, nothing is uploaded, and the GIF keeps the PNG's name and size in pixels: logo.png is saved as logo.gif.

A PNG pixel can be partly see-through, which is how soft shadows, glows and smooth curved edges are drawn. A GIF pixel is either clear or solid. Here every pixel that is at least half solid becomes fully solid, and most fainter ones become clear.

We tested a logo with a soft drop shadow. In the GIF the shadow became a hard black band and its faint outer edge was gone, a half see-through dot came out fully solid, and the rounded corners showed small steps where they had been smooth. A flat icon with hard edges came through with every pixel unchanged.

Tip: If a soft shadow or glow matters, keep the PNG wherever it is accepted, or take the shadow out of the design before you convert, so the GIF has only hard edges to keep.

What you are starting with

Lossless pixels with transparency. Screenshots, logos, anything with an edge.

What you are getting

256 colours and a loop. Old, limited, immortal.

Worth knowing

GIF keeps only 256 colours, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

256 colours: fine for logos, hard on photos

A GIF holds at most 256 colours, so the converter picks the 256 that suit each picture best. Pictures made of a few flat colours lose almost nothing, and photos lose the most. These are four PNGs we converted on this page in Chrome and Firefox:

Four PNGs and the GIFs they became
The PNGColoursFile sizeHow the GIF looked
Icon of 4 flat colours, 256 × 2564, all kept813 bytes to 1.5 KBEvery pixel the same
Logo with a soft shadow, 400 × 240666 to about 7010 KB to under 2.5 KBHard shadow, stepped corners
Screenshot of a settings screen, 2560 × 1600484 to 93119 KB to 62 KBText as sharp as before
Photo, 1200 × 80080,363 to 2551.4 MB to 404 KBRight at normal size, bands in the sky up close

Fewer colours pack tighter, so photos and screenshots usually get smaller, while a tiny icon can grow. A photo still pays for it in smooth shading, so a GIF is rarely the best format for one: JPEG vs PNG explains which format suits photos and which suits logos and screenshots. Starting from a JPG or an SVG instead? Convert JPG to GIF and convert SVG to GIF work the same way, with the same 256-colour limit.

Making an animated GIF from PNGs

This page makes one still GIF from each PNG. Add up to 100 at once: they convert one after another, and Download all (ZIP) saves the GIFs together. An animated PNG (APNG) also gives a still GIF of its first frame: our 6-frame APNG came out as 1 frame.

To play several PNGs in order, use Images to GIF. You drag the pictures into order and choose the Time per frame (0.1 to 3 seconds), the Width (320 to 800 pixels, or Original for smaller pictures) and whether it plays Forever, Once or 3 times. That GIF has no see-through areas: transparent parts of each PNG are filled with a background colour, white unless you pick another.

An animated WebP keeps every frame and its timing when you convert WebP to GIF. Slides still in a PowerPoint deck can skip the PNG step: convert PowerPoint to GIF makes each slide a frame. Going the other way, convert GIF to PNG gives you a PNG again, but the colours and soft edges the GIF left out do not come back.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a PNG to GIF?

Select or drop your PNG on this page, or up to 100 of them, and press Convert to GIF. There are no settings to choose. Save the GIF with its Download button, or use Download all (ZIP) for several. The PNG never leaves your device.

Does a transparent PNG stay transparent as a GIF?

Yes, but only as on or off. Fully see-through areas stay see-through. A partly see-through pixel becomes solid when it is at least half solid and usually clear when it is fainter, so soft shadows and smooth edges turn hard.

Can I turn several PNGs into one animated GIF?

Not on this page, which makes one still GIF for each PNG. Images to GIF does it: put the PNGs in order and choose the Time per frame, the Width and how often it repeats. Its GIF fills transparent areas with a background colour.

Why does my GIF look worse than the PNG?

A GIF holds at most 256 colours, so fine detail and smooth shading are lost. Our test photo went from 80,363 colours to 255 and showed bands in the sky up close, though it looked right at normal size. Logos and icons made of a few flat colours keep them.

Is converting PNG to GIF free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The PNG is read and the GIF is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the GIF look exactly like the PNG?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
