Why turn an SVG into WebP
To convert SVG to WebP, select or drop the SVG on this page, keep Balanced or pick another Image quality, and press Convert to WEBP. Your browser draws the SVG as pixels and saves them as a WebP, so the file never leaves your device. This SVG to WebP converter is free and works online in a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, with no daily limit.
It is for when a site builder, shop or upload form will not take an SVG but does take WebP. An SVG is code as well as a drawing, and it can carry scripts, so some sites refuse it. WebP is the web's efficient picture format, and unlike JPG it keeps a see-through background, though some older apps still refuse it.
Do not expect a smaller file than the SVG. An SVG stores a few shapes, while a WebP stores every pixel: in our tests a 393-byte logo became a 9.7 KB WebP at Balanced, and a 14 KB illustration became 23 KB. Next to a PNG of the same drawing, the WebP was the lighter file: 258 KB for the illustration as a PNG, 25 KB for the logo. So where the SVG itself is accepted, use the SVG.

Drawing instructions, not pixels. Scales to a billboard without blurring.
The web’s efficient format. Smaller than JPEG, refused by older software.
WebP compresses the picture, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.
Size, quality and transparency
The WebP is drawn at the width and height written in the SVG, with mm, cm, in, pt and pc counted at 96 pixels to the inch. Without them the viewBox sets the size, and with neither the WebP is 1,024 pixels square. The long side stops at 8,192 pixels: a 10,000 × 5,000 SVG came out at 8,192 × 4,096.
| Image quality | Logo (393-byte SVG, 512 × 512) | Illustration (14 KB SVG, 1,200 × 800) |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller | 8.3 KB | 16 KB |
| Balanced (the default) | 9.7 KB | 23 KB |
| Best | 13.7 KB | 50 KB |
| The same SVG as a PNG | 25 KB | 258 KB |
Every setting makes a lossy WebP, which trades fine detail for a smaller file. That is why the route is graded Very good: it looks right at normal size, but the pixels are not exact. Firefox gave sizes within 5% of these.
Transparency is kept, half see-through parts included: a red square at 50% opacity came out at exactly half in Chrome and Firefox.
Other formats for the same SVG
- Convert SVG to PNG when every pixel must stay exact. PNG is lossless and keeps the transparency, at a bigger file size, as the table shows.
- Convert SVG to JPG for a form that asks for a JPG. Empty areas turn white, because a JPG cannot be see-through.
- Already have the picture as pixels? Convert PNG to WebP for screenshots and graphics, convert JPG to WebP for photos, or convert GIF to WebP to keep an animation moving.
Keep the SVG as well. A WebP is fixed at the size it was drawn at and goes soft when stretched, while the SVG stays sharp at any size; raster vs vector explains why.
Questions people ask
How do I convert SVG to WebP?
Drop the SVG on this page or pick it with the file picker; it is read on your device, not uploaded. Leave Image quality on Balanced or change it, press Convert to WEBP, and save the result with its Download button. The WebP keeps the SVG's name, so logo.svg becomes logo.webp.
Does WebP keep the transparent background of my SVG?
Yes. Areas where the SVG draws nothing stay see-through in the WebP, and half see-through parts keep their opacity. A background the SVG paints itself, such as a white rectangle, stays in the picture. Only a JPG fills empty areas with white.
Which quality setting should I choose?
Balanced, the default, suits most web pages. Best keeps more fine detail, such as small lettering, for a bigger file: our illustration went from 23 KB to 50 KB. Smaller gives the lightest file. All three keep the same width and height in pixels.
What size will the WebP be?
In pixels, the width and height set on the SVG's svg tag, else its viewBox, else 1,024 × 1,024, up to 8,192 on the long side. For a bigger WebP, raise the width and height in the SVG first. With a viewBox, the drawing grows with them and stays sharp: a 24-pixel icon set to 1024 came out as a 1024 × 1024 WebP, drawn at the new size.
Is converting SVG to WebP free?
Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
What happens to my files?
Nothing leaves your device. The SVG is read and the WebP is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.
Will the WebP look exactly like the SVG?
This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.
How large can my file be?
As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
