What happens to animation and transparency

To change GIF to JPEG, drop the GIF on this page and press Convert to JPEG. This free GIF to JPG converter works inside your browser, so the GIF is never uploaded, and the JPG keeps its name: banner.gif is saved as banner.jpg. A GIF that does not move looks the same as a JPG, ready for a form or app that will not take a GIF. Two things change on the way:

  • Animation stops. A JPG holds one still picture, so an animated GIF gives its first frame and the other frames are left out. We tried an 8-frame sticker and a 20-frame clip of 1.4 MB: each JPG matched frame 1, and the JPG of the clip was under 6 KB.
  • See-through areas turn white. A JPG has no transparency, so the converter puts white behind the picture before it saves. The clear background of our test logo came out white in Chrome and in Firefox.

Want every frame as a picture of its own? Open the GIF in GIF to frames, choose JPG under Save as, and keep every frame, every few frames or only the ones you pick. To keep the movement itself, GIF to WebP, under Related conversions below, keeps every frame and its timing.

What you are starting with

256 colours and a loop. Old, limited, immortal.

What you are getting

Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.

Worth knowing

JPEG compresses the picture and has no transparency, so fine detail is lost. It looks right at normal size.

How much JPG quality a GIF needs

Under Image quality you get Smaller, Balanced and Best, which save at JPEG quality 60, 80 and 95 out of 100. Balanced is picked until you change it. Only the file size and the fine detail change: the JPG keeps the width and height of the GIF. We converted a photo-like GIF and a bar chart at each setting:

JPG sizes from two test GIFs, Chrome / Firefox, October 2026
Image qualityPhoto GIF, 1200 × 800, 655 KBBar chart GIF, 32 colours, 8.8 KB
Smaller89 KB / 92 KB12.3 KB / 17.7 KB
Balanced137 KB / 139 KB14.8 KB / 20.6 KB
Best317 KB / 377 KB19.8 KB / 36.9 KB
The same GIF as a PNG1.6 MB / 1.2 MB15.7 KB / 20.2 KB

Balanced suits most uses: it cut our photo GIF to about a fifth of its size. Pick Smaller when a form sets a strict size limit, and Best when you will print or edit the picture and want to keep more detail. No setting adds detail the GIF never had, though. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, so any banding or speckle in it is still there in the JPG, even at Best.

When a GIF should become a PNG instead

JPEG was made for photographs. On logos, text and flat-colour charts it leaves faint smudges along sharp edges, and it often saves no space. Our 32-colour bar chart came out with more than 2,000 colours as a JPG at Balanced, almost all of the changed pixels along the edges of the bars and letters, and the JPG was larger than the GIF at every setting. A 2.4 KB logo became a 6.9 KB JPG.

For pictures like these, convert GIF to PNG. The PNG copies every pixel exactly and keeps the see-through background, and our chart as a PNG was about the size of its JPG. Keep JPG for photo-like GIFs, or for a form that takes nothing else. When to send a JPEG and when to send a PNG walks through the choice for photos, screenshots and logos.

Batch convert GIF to JPG

Select up to 100 GIFs in the file picker, or drag them onto the page together. Your browser converts them one after another, all at the Image quality you chose, and each JPG takes the name of its GIF. Save them one by one with their Download buttons, or press Download all (ZIP) to get every JPG in one file, whatafile-converted.zip.

Other formats that a form turns away have pages of their own: convert WebP to JPG for pictures saved from websites, and convert SVG to JPG for logos and icons drawn as SVG. To go the other way, convert JPG to GIF, bearing in mind that a GIF holds only 256 colours.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a GIF to JPG?

Drop the GIF on this page, or select up to 100 of them. Leave Image quality on Balanced or choose Smaller or Best, press Convert to JPEG, then press Download. It all happens in your browser, so the GIF stays on your device.

Does an animated GIF stay animated as a JPG?

No. A JPG holds one still picture, so you get the first frame of the GIF and the other frames are left out. To keep the animation, convert the GIF to WebP instead, from Related conversions on this page.

Why is the background white where my GIF was see-through?

Because a JPG cannot store transparency. The converter fills every see-through pixel with white before it saves the JPG. To keep a transparent background, convert the GIF to PNG instead.

Can I get every frame of a GIF as separate JPGs?

Yes, with GIF to frames. Under Keep, leave Every frame (or choose Every few frames or Pick frames), choose JPG under Save as and press Save frames. Several frames come together in one ZIP, numbered in order.

Can I convert GIF to JPG on a Mac?

Yes, with nothing to install. Open this page in a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox on your Mac, drop the GIF and press Convert to JPEG. The steps are the same on a Windows PC, because the converter runs in the browser.

Is converting GIF to JPG free?

Yes, and there is no daily limit. The conversion runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.

What happens to my files?

Nothing leaves your device. The GIF is read and the JPG is made inside your browser, so there is nothing on our servers to delete.

Will the JPG look exactly like the GIF?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Pick or drop a file here, it is converted in your browser, and you save the result.

How large can my file be?

As large as your browser can handle: pictures up to about 90 megapixels on a typical computer, less on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 files at a time and they convert one after another on your device.
