What plain text keeps and drops
To convert RTF to TXT, press Select RTF file or drop your .rtf on the tool above, then press Convert to TXT. There is nothing to set. Our server opens the Rich Text document and saves its words as a plain .txt in one step, and the name carries over, so minutes.rtf comes back as minutes.txt.
This RTF to text converter grades the route Words only. The words of the main text all arrive, in reading order, while fonts, sizes, bold, italics, colours and pictures do not. A few parts that sit outside the main text are left out as well, which matters if your document leans on them. We checked each part with test files:
| In your RTF | In the .txt file |
|---|---|
| Headings and paragraphs | One line each, however long, with no blank line between them |
| A line break made with Shift+Enter | A new line |
| Bulleted and numbered lists | Indented four spaces, each item with its • or its number |
| Tables | One row per line, with a tab between cells |
| Links | The linked words, without the web address |
| Footnotes | The footnote number stays in the sentence; the note itself is left out |
| Headers, footers, comments and text boxes | Left out |
| Pictures | Left out |

Formatted text that almost anything can open. The lowest common denominator with bold.
Just the words. No fonts, no layout, no arguments.
You keep every word but lose the layout: fonts and images are dropped, and text in columns comes out one column after another.
Why convert RTF to TXT
An RTF file is text wrapped in formatting codes that start with a backslash. Read one with a script or paste it raw into a box that expects text, and those codes come along with every word. A .txt holds only the words, so it is the safer file for a web form, a code comment, a notes app, or a program that reads text line by line.
If the formatting matters, plain text is the wrong target. Convert RTF to ODT for LibreOffice Writer, or convert RTF to Word for a .docx you can edit. Both are one step, graded Exact, and from our test file each kept the table, the bold words, the footnote and the picture that the .txt left behind.
Other files have their own way to plain text: convert HTML to text for a saved web page, or convert PowerPoint to text for the words on a deck's slides. Going the other way, convert text to RTF to make a .txt ready for formatting: each line becomes a paragraph, with blank lines and tabs kept.
Encoding and line breaks
The .txt is saved as UTF-8, the standard text encoding, with a byte order mark: an invisible marker at the very start that tells editors which encoding the file uses. In our tests accents, the £ and € signs, Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese and an emoji all came through, and so did an older RTF written in the Cyrillic Windows code page. Chinese and Japanese, which our RTF to PDF route prints as empty boxes, arrive here as real text, because a text file needs no fonts.
- Each line ends with a single line feed, the style Mac and Linux use, rather than the carriage return and line feed pair of Windows (CRLF).
- A paragraph is one long line. Your editor may wrap it on screen, but the file holds no breaks inside it.
- A page break leaves no mark: the next page simply starts on the next line.
Tracked changes and hidden text come through
Plain text cannot mark words as deleted or hidden, so two things arrive that you may not expect:
- Tracked changes that were never accepted. In our test the deleted words and the added words both appeared, side by side, with nothing to tell them apart.
- Hidden text. Words formatted as hidden in your word processor came through as ordinary words.
Accept or reject every change and delete any hidden text in your word processor, save the RTF, then convert it. Comments need no clean-up, as they are left out.
Questions people ask
How do I convert RTF to TXT?
Press Select RTF file, or drop the .rtf anywhere on this page; nothing uploads until you convert. There is nothing to set, so press Convert to TXT and download the .txt file. The free plan converts three files a day, up to 25 MB each and one at a time, with no account.
What is lost when RTF becomes plain text?
All the formatting: fonts, sizes, bold, colours and page layout, and every picture. Headers, footers, comments, the text of footnotes and the words inside text boxes are left out too. The words of the main text all stay, in reading order, with each list item and table row on a line of its own.
What encoding will the TXT file use?
UTF-8 with a byte order mark, and each line ends with a line feed. In our tests every character came through as it was, from accents and the euro sign to Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese and an emoji.
What happens to tables in my RTF?
Each row becomes one line, with a tab between its cells, so a row of Month, Sales and Costs reads as those three words with tabs between them. Borders and shading are dropped. Paste the lines into a spreadsheet and the tabs put each cell back in a column of its own.
Do tracked changes show up in the text file?
Yes, if they were never accepted: the deleted words and the added words both appear, side by side. Accept or reject the changes in your word processor and save the RTF before you convert. Hidden text comes through as well.
Is converting RTF to Text free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your RTF and the Text we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the Text look exactly like the RTF?
This pair grades as “Words only”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
