How an HTML file becomes slides
To convert HTML to PPT, drop your .html or .htm file on the tool above, keep PPTX as the PowerPoint version and press Convert to PPTX. You get a deck named after your file, one slide for each page it fills: report.html comes back as report.pptx.
This HTML to PowerPoint converter works in two steps. Your file is first laid out on A4 pages, the way a word processor would print it, and each page is then rebuilt as a slide. A PDF sits in between, which is why the route is graded Very good rather than Exact. From our test report:
- Each line of text became a text box of its own, in its original font, size and colour, with bold and italic intact. A red note set at 20px arrived as 15 pt red Arial.
- Bullets and table cells arrived as editable text as well. The table grid turned into a picture behind them, so it is not a PowerPoint table.
- A chart written into the HTML as a data URI appeared on the slide as a picture. A picture loaded from another web address left an empty gap.
- The slides came out as upright A4 (595 by 842 points), not the wide 16:9 shape decks usually have, and text longer than a page carried on to the next slide.

A document as markup. Opens in a browser, edits in anything.
Modern PowerPoint. Slides, notes, and one animation someone regrets.
Each page is laid out as a word processor would print it, then rebuilt as a slide with editable text: side-by-side boxes stack, hidden parts show and scripts do not run.
HTML slide decks and scripts
Many HTML presentations are a single web page in which a script shows one slide at a time. Scripts do not run here, and the CSS that hides the other slides is not applied either, so a deck like that does not come out slide for slide. Our four-slide test deck came back as one A4 slide holding the words of all four, one under the other, and the line its script adds was missing.
There are two ways to keep the slides apart:
- Save the deck as a PDF first, from its own export or with your browser's Print and Save as PDF. Check that every slide sits on its own page, then convert PDF to PowerPoint: each PDF page becomes a slide.
- If you can edit the HTML, set the page in its CSS. @page { size: 13.333in 7.5in; } gave wide 16:9 slides of 960 by 540 points, and page-break-before: always on each slide's heading started a new slide. The same break on a section or a div was ignored, so put it on the heading.
PPTX or PPT, and why to keep PPTX
Keep PPTX unless the deck has to open in PowerPoint from before 2007, as the help line under PowerPoint version says. Picking PPT (PowerPoint 97) adds a third step: the PPTX is made first and then saved again in the old format. The route then runs HTML, PDF, PPTX, PPT: one more save, in a format that holds less. If you keep the PPTX and need a .ppt later, convert PPTX to PPT does that last step on its own.
| PPTX | PPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | PowerPoint 2007 and later | Software from before 2007 |
| Steps on the route | 2 | 3 |
| Grade shown | Good enough | Good enough |
| File size in our test | 122 KB | 754 KB |
The slides themselves matched: turned back into PPTX, the .ppt had the same four slides with the same text boxes and pictures. Our guide to PPT vs PPTX covers which one to send to someone else.
Other things to make from an HTML file
Slides suit a file you want to present. For other jobs, the same .html file converts here too:
- A document to keep editing: convert HTML to Word. Headings become Word heading styles and tables stay real tables, which slides cannot give you.
- A file for a word processor that reads RTF: convert HTML to RTF.
- The words alone, for a form, a search index or a program: convert HTML to text.
Going the other way, convert PowerPoint to HTML turns a deck back into a web page. When the words are in a Word file instead, convert Word to PowerPoint builds slides the same way: one per page, with each line in a text box of its own.
Questions people ask
Can I change the words on the slides?
Yes, the text stays editable. Each line of text is a separate text box that keeps its font, size, colour, bold and italic, so a word or a figure can be changed straight away. A paragraph is several boxes, one per line, so rewriting a whole paragraph takes longer.
Will my HTML slide deck keep its slides?
Only if each slide starts a new page when the HTML is laid out. A deck whose script shows one slide at a time does not: scripts do not run, so the words of every slide land on the same pages. Save such a deck as a PDF with one slide per page and convert that PDF to PowerPoint instead.
Can I convert a web page URL to PowerPoint?
No. There is no box for a web address: the page converts an .html or .htm file you upload. Save the page from your browser as an .html file first. Pictures it loads from other addresses are not inside that file, so they leave empty gaps on the slides.
Should I choose PPTX or PPT?
PPTX, unless the deck must open in PowerPoint from before 2007. PPT adds a step, in a format that holds less, and in our test the .ppt was about six times the size of the .pptx.
Does the PowerPoint keep images from my HTML?
Pictures written into the HTML as data URIs do: each sits on the slide where the page put it, with the text in its own boxes around it. Pictures from another web address, or saved in a folder beside the .html, are not uploaded with it and leave a gap. A page holding only a picture became a slide with just that picture.
How do I get widescreen slides instead of A4?
There is no slide size option, so set it in the HTML. Adding @page { size: 13.333in 7.5in; } to the CSS gave 16:9 slides of 960 by 540 points in our test. size: landscape gives A4 on its side instead.
Is converting HTML to PowerPoint free?
Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.
What happens to my files?
Both your HTML and the PowerPoint we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.
Will the PowerPoint look exactly like the HTML?
This pair grades as “Good enough”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.
How large can my file be?
25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.
Can I convert several files at once?
On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
