What comes back in the Word file

To change a picture to Word, select or drop a JPG of printed text on this page, keep DOCX under Word version, press Convert to DOCX and download the result. This JPG to Word converter reads the English words in the photo on our server and writes them into a Word document named after the picture: letter.jpg comes back as letter.docx.

You get the words, not the photo. Each line of the picture becomes its own paragraph, so a sentence that ran onto a second line is split in two, and joining those lines is the main tidying job. A bold heading comes back as plain text, a table as lines of words without its grid, and any logo or drawing on the page is left out.

So image to Word here means text you can edit, not a copy of the page. If you want the picture itself in a Word document, insert it in Word (Insert, then Pictures): there is nothing to convert.

How to convert JPEG to DOCX

  1. 1
    Select or drop your JPG

Nothing uploads until you press convert.

  2. 2
    Choose your options

We show the route and its fidelity grade up front.

  3. 3
    Download your Word file

What you are starting with

Photographs, compressed. Small files, no transparency, slight fuzz.

What you are getting

Modern Word. The default way the working world writes things down.

Worth knowing

A PDF is a frozen page, so the file is rebuilt, not copied. Expect the odd margin, font or line break to move.

Good to know about converting JPEG to DOCX

  • The words in the picture are read and come back as ordinary Word paragraphs.
  • Only the text comes back. The photo itself is not placed in the Word file.
  • The words are read as English, so text in other languages is likely to come out with mistakes.
  • Sharp, straight, well-lit printed text reads best. Check names and numbers afterwards.

Getting a clean result from a photo

The text reader is set up for English and works best on printed text that is sharp, straight and evenly lit. To show how much each of those matters, we converted test pictures of printed pages here, each with one fault:

Test pictures and what came back in Word (22 October 2026)
The pictureWhat came back
A straight, evenly lit scan, 2,480 pixels wideEvery word of the letter right, £1,250.00, René and a phone number included. The table lost its Quantity heading and one figure.
The same scan at 600 pixels wideNearly all right, but 418 became Als and a full stop became a comma.
Tilted by 3 degreesEvery word right, but one line moved below the table.
A shadow across the top of the pageWhole lines missing. One photo gave back just a few words from the whole page.
Turned on its sideStrings of nonsense letters.
A page set in two columnsEach line read straight across both columns, so the two texts were mixed.

So take the photo straight on, in good light, with no shadow across the page, and fill the frame with it. Turn a sideways picture upright with Rotate image first. For a page in columns, cut each column into its own picture with Crop image and convert them one at a time.

Tip: Only a picture that looks sideways on your screen needs turning. Phone photos are often stored sideways with a note telling apps which way is up, and that note is followed: our test picture saved that way was read the right way up.

Other languages lose their accents. In a French letter, à became a, fêtes became fétes and François became Francois, and one line moved out of order. Whatever the language, check names, numbers and prices before you rely on the text.

Image to Text or JPG to Word?

Both read English text on our server. Image to Text shows the words on the page with a Copy text button, or saves them as a .txt file, and takes JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF or SVG. This page gives you a Word document instead. Pick Image to Text for a quote or a phone number, and JPG to Word for a letter or a page you will rework and save.

  • A screenshot is usually a PNG: convert PNG to Word the same way. Not sure which kind of file you have? JPEG vs PNG explains the difference.
  • A scanner's TIFF file: convert TIFF to Word. In our test, a two-page TIFF came back as one Word file with both pages.
  • A scanned PDF: convert PDF to Word, which reads the English words on scanned pages the same way.
  • Going the other way, convert Word to JPG to turn each page of a document into a picture.

Free plan limits and deletion

The free plan gives three conversions a day, one file at a time, each up to 25 MB, with no account. Pro and Business take files up to 100 MB with no daily cap, and up to 100 files at once. Your JPG and the Word file are both deleted 24 hours after each conversion.

Each JPG becomes its own Word file. To get photos of several pages into one document, put them into one PDF with JPG to PDF, a page per photo, then convert that PDF to Word. In our test, a PDF of two page pictures came back as one Word file, each page starting on a new page.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a JPG to Word?

Select or drop your JPG on this page; nothing uploads until you press convert. Under Word version, keep DOCX (Word) or pick DOC (Word 97), press Convert to DOCX (or Convert to DOC) and download the Word file. The words are read on our server, in English.

Will my photo appear in the Word document?

No. Only the text comes back, as plain paragraphs you can edit. The photo itself, and any logo or drawing on the page, is left out of the Word file.

Can it read handwriting or text in other languages?

It is made for printed English. In our test of a French letter, accents were dropped or changed, so à became a. Two handwriting-style typefaces came through with a few slips, such as ligt for list, but real handwriting is far less regular and we have not tested it, so do not rely on it.

Can I get a .doc file instead of .docx?

Yes. Pick DOC (Word 97) under Word version and the button becomes Convert to DOC. For JPEG to DOC the DOCX is made first and then saved in the older format, one step more, so the route is graded Good enough rather than Very good. The text in it is the same. Pick DOC only for software from before 2007.

Can I edit the text after turning my JPG into Word?

Yes. The recognised words are written into Word as normal text, so you can change, copy and restyle them. A character can be misread, so check anything that must be exact.

Is converting JPG to Word free?

Yes. Up to 25 MB and three conversions a day are free, with no account. Pro and Business lift the file limit to 100 MB and remove the daily cap.

What happens to my files?

Both your JPG and the Word we produce are deleted 24 hours after each conversion, automatically. Try again and Continue to another tool start a new conversion, with its own 24 hours. Nothing is used for training and no human looks at your documents.

Will the Word look exactly like the JPG?

This pair grades as “Very good”. We show the exact route and that grade before you convert, so there are no surprises about what survives the trip.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Nothing to install. Pick or drop a file here, it's converted on our servers, and you download the result.

How large can my file be?

25 MB on the free plan, and 100 MB on Pro and Business.

Can I convert several files at once?

On Pro and Business, yes: add up to 100 files before converting. The free plan converts one file at a time.
